Staffordshire Bull Terrier Information

Overview: The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is an energetic and very playful breed. It likes to exercise often and loves to be with its master. It might not get along well with other dog breeds all the time. However it seems to accept other pets and animals well enough. It also is moderately accepting of strangers. Training takes a little dedication on the owner’s part. Though this breed does respond to training, it may just take a little longer than some other breeds. It can make an adequate watchdog and guard dog. Little attention is needed regarding the grooming of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. It is somewhat resistant to both cold and hot weather.

Temperament: Quite the playful breed, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier enjoys having fun with its master. The only thing it needs more than fun is the human companionship of its master and others. It gets along well with most people, even those it doesn't know well. It may have a problem around dogs it's not used too and even dogs that it is close with, yet gets challenged by. In England, some refer to this breed as the nanny dog because it is very good around children and even willingly acts as nursemaid.

History: In England during the early 19th century it was popular to go rat killing as a sport. This eventually evolved into dog fighting. In the efforts of those that fancied this sport to make a strong fighter for the ring, they crossed the bulldog with the Black and Tan Terrier. This produced what was known during this time as the Bull and Terrier. Selective breeding began to further increase the strength and speed of this dog to become the best ring fighter. Not only did this create a dangerous fighting foe, but also a friendly ally, breeding the dog to be gentle with humans. Eventually dog fighting became illegal in England. However the popularity of this new dog was significant and continued to grow in fans who sought a different and legal competitive path for this it. The show ring was the answer that they were looking for. Through the efforts of breeders trying to create a contending breed, the EKC recognized this dog in 1935. It took another three decades before the AKC also recognized this breed. Although the fighting reputation of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier has followed it even to this day, owners realize that it is a gentle and sweet dog, not a fighter.

Names: There are no other names the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is known by.

Groups: The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1975 and assigned to the Terrier Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Staffordshire Bull Terrier can be 17 to 19 inches in height and can weigh between 30 and 40 lb. A wide, muscular body gives it a low center of gravity. The jaws are extraordinarily powerful. The coat that this breed wears is smooth and short, lying close to the skin. There are several colors that this dog may be seen in including; red, fawn, white, black, blue, brindle, any of these colors with white, as well as black and tan or even liver.

Care: The Staffordshire Bull Terrier needs to have daily exercise with either a good sized walk or active games. It can live outdoors in mild weather, however it is best for the dog both physically and mentally to be with people as it is socially minded. It is recommended that it lives in a house and has access to the outdoors. Its coat doesn't need much in the way of maintenance.
