Overview: The Scottish Terrier is an energetic, playful, and loving dog that likes to be around its master. Also, it doesn't mind being with other dog breeds and pets. This canine is okay around strangers once it gets to know them a bit. It can be considered difficult to train as it doesn't respond well to learning new things. The Scottish Terrier makes an excellent watchdog, however doesn't do well as a protection dog. Grooming can be a bit of a challenge if the owner is the impatient type. History: The history of the Scottish Terrier is something of a challenge as all terriers in Scotland were once known as Scottish or Scotch Terriers. Compounding the confusion is that today's Scottish Terrier was once grouped with the Skye Terrier breed. This was not referencing modern Skye Terriers but all Terriers from the Isle of Skye. Regardless of this confusion, the early versions of the Scottish Terrier were a hardy lot of Highlanders. The first true recording of the Scottish Terrier can be found back in the late 19th century. Of all the Terriers with short legs and rough hair, this breed became the most favored of the Aberdeen area. This led to it being named the Aberdeen Terrier for a time. A while later the ideal Scottish Terrier was identified with standards to keep the confusion down to a minimum. Around 1880 was when the first of the breed standard was introduced to the public. The first of this breed reached the United States no more than three years after the standard was released. Its popularity in America rose dramatically after World War II. Fala, Franklin Roosevelt's Scottish Terrier, is considered to be the most well-known among the breed. Fala was a loyal companion to Franklin Roosevelt and was even buried at his side when she died. This dog is used mainly for shows and as home companions.

Groups: The Scottish Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885 and assigned to the Terrier Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Scottish Terrier is about 10 inches tall and can weigh between 18 and 22 lb. The coat is hard and thin on the outer coat, while soft and thick on the undercoat. The broken coat can be black, wheaten, or brindle in color.

Care: An adventurous dog, the Scottish Terrier needs a large and safe area to explore. It needs to have daily exercise to keep itself happy. A good sized walk or a fun and challenging game should do the trick. It is best for the dog to live inside with access to the outdoors. The coat needs to be combed three times a week with shaping every three months.
