| Standard Schnauzer Information |
Overview: The Standard Schnauzer is a playful and energetic dog that enjoys a good amount of exercise with its master. It might get along with other dog breeds and doesn't seem to mind other animals. It doesn't like being around people it doesn't know making it both an excellent watch dog and guard dog. This breed isn't hard to train as it responds well to new things. Grooming will need some patience on the owner’s part. It is fairly resistant to both cold and hot temperatures. Temperament: Considered to be a fun and active companion, the Standard Schnauzer is a good friend and guardian. It is clever and stubborn and it can be mischievous if it has not participated in enough exercise during the day. The ideal owner for this dog is patient, yet firm. This breed is good around children and is loyal to its master. The Standard Schnauzer can be aggressive towards unfamiliar, but it usually gets along well with other pets. It may act reserved around people it doesn't know, even protective if it feels the need. History: The oldest of three schnauzer breeds from Germany, the Standard Schnauzer is the prototype and has been seen since around the 14th century. Even at that time it was used as a household pet and a hunting partner. It is believed the Schnauzer was a mix between Wirehaired Pinschers, Black German Poodles, and Gray Wolf Spitz. The result of this mix was a rat catcher that could also function as a guard dog. By the 20th century this breed was the most popular among guard dogs for the carts of farmers and markets. The first Schnauzer to enter the show ring was called a Wirehaired Pinscher during 1879 in Germany. The way the dog looked sparked the interest of dog fanciers and by the beginning of the 20th century it was a very popular show dog. It was around this time that the Standard Schnauzer first arrived in the United States. However it did not gain as much popularity so quickly like it did in Germany. Originally classified as a Terrier, this dog was later on reclassified as a working dog. This breed was used as a dispatch carrier and aide during World War I. Like the Giant Schnauzer, the Standard Schnauzer was used in the police force. It wasn't until after World War II that this breed gained the awareness of the general public. Even so, it still has yet to reach the same level of popularity as the other Schnauzers. Names: The Standard Schnauzer is also known as the Mittelschnauzer. Groups: The Standard Schnauzer was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1904 and assigned to the Working Group. Physical Characteristics: This sturdy, square proportioned breed can reach an average adult height of 17.5 to 19.5 inches and can weigh between 35 and 45 lb. The coat of this breed is tight and hard. The undercoat is soft and close to the body while the outer coat is harsh and wiry. The color of this breed can be pepper and salt, and black. Care: Daily exercise, both physical and mental, is needed for this dog to both stay in shape and to use up energy. A long walk or an active game outside should do. It is best for the Standard Schnauzer to live inside with access to the outdoors. The coat needs to be brushed twice a week with shaping four times a year. Usually, the shaping should be done by a professional. |
