Overview: The Pomeranian is a very playful and energetic breed. It gets along well with other pets, as long as they're not dogs. This canine isn’t particularly friendly toward strangers. The Pomeranian is a very good watchdog, but has poor protection abilities. Grooming of this dog can be a involved because of its hair. It is fairly resistant to both hot and cold climates.

Temperament: A very curious, excited, and cocky dog, the Pomeranian is ready for any form of an adventure and loves to play games. It is nervous around people it doesn't know. It may be aggressive towards other breeds. Some tend to bark a lot.

History: The Pomeranian is considered to be the smallest of the Spitz breeds. It is unknown as to when this dog started to be bred down in size. Pomerania is the speculated location of origin for this breed, but there are no records to indicate its true location. It is believed to have originated somewhere in Germany around the 19th century. It could be that one of the ancestors of this breed is the Deutscher Spitz. When this breed was brought to England was when it received the name Pomeranian. At this time the Pomeranian looked a lot different, specifically the size. It could get up to 30 lb. and was often white in color around the time it reached England. It is likely the Japanese Spitz descended from this breed. Even though the EKC accepted the Pomeranian in 1870, it wasn't until Queen Victoria brought one back with her from Florence, Italy, that its popularity grew in England. By the beginning of the 20th century the Pomeranian was registered with the AKC and was being actively shown in a variety of colors. This breed has been continually bred to be smaller and to have a more of a fluffy coat. The Pomeranian is a very popular show dog to this day.

Groups: The Pomeranian was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1888 and assigned to the Toy Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Pomeranian can be 8 to 11 inches in height, and can weigh between 3 and 7 lb. This rather dainty breed has a double coat. The undercoat is soft to the touch and can be thick. The outer coat is long and has a rough texture. The coat can come in many colors including but not limited too; red, orange, cream, sable, black, brown, and blue.

Care: While the Pomeranian has a lot of energy it doesn't require a large amount of exercise to use it up. A nice walk, or even just playing with its owner should suffice. Even though its coat could stand it, the body of the Pomeranian wouldn't enjoy living outdoors. It should be around humans as much as possible with access to the outdoors. Its coat needs to be brushed about twice a week and even more when it is shedding.
