Overview: The Gordon Setter is an active and energetic dog that likes to play with other dogs and animals and doesn't mind the presence of strangers. This breed shows a lot of affection and loves to be with its owner. With it being easy to train, the Gordon Setter has great watchdog and protection potential as well as it being able to resist cold and hot environments.

Temperament: With the amount of energy the Gordon Setter has it can play all day without getting tired and needs just that. If this dog doesn't get enough exercise it will get bored and start to get frustrated. It is an attention needy breed that likes to be around humans it knows but can be aggressive toward unfamiliar people and dogs.

History: This breed of setter has been around since the 17th century. However it wasn't known as a separate breed until the 18th century when it was beloved by the fourth Duke of Gordon who kept them as pets. This breed was then named the Gordon Castle Setter and known as that until around the 20th century when it was renamed the Black and Tan Setter. When the English Kennel Club registered this breed the name was once again changed to the Gordon Setter. Today, it continues to be used as a bird setting dog. Because it is not as fast as some other setters, it doesn’t enjoy the popularity of other breeds.

Names: Though it was known by at least two other names in the past, the Gordon Setter currently doesn't have any other names by which it is known.

Groups: The Gordon Setter was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1884 and assigned to the Sporting Group.

Physical Characteristics: The Gordon Setter adult can have a height between 23 and 27 inches and can weigh 45 to 80 lb. The coat of this breed is soft and either straight or lightly waved. The colors of the coat can be a rich black with brown or tan markings. It is the largest of the setters and has a sturdy build with strength and stamina.

Care: A lot of exercise is required for this dog as it has tons of energy and needs to get it out, otherwise it will get bored. It can live outside but it needs plenty of time with people so it is best to let it live inside with access to the outdoors. The coat of the Gordon Setter needs to be brushed two or three times a week and some trimming may be needed.
