Goldendoodle Information

Overview: The Goldendoodle breed is a of hybrid nature. That is to say that it is a mixture of two pure breeds, specifically a Golden Retriever dam and usually Standard Poodle sire. Sometimes a Miniature Poodle or even Toy Poodle sire is used to obtain a smaller size Goldendoodle.  To estimate the resulting adult size of the breeding, one can add both the parents’ weights together and divide by two in order to get an average full-grown weight for the new puppies.

Temperament: Taking after its parent breeds, the Goldendoodle is a highly intelligent hybrid, easy to train. The most often word used to describe this designer breed is ‘gentle’.  It can make for a wonderful therapy or service dog. Generally this breed is compatible with other pets, very people friendly and not prone to barking without provocation.  Active, outgoing and eager for human attention and companionship, this canine makes for a wonderful family companion dog.

History:  Both North American and Australian breeders lay claim to the early development and promotion of the Goldendoodle.  Smaller Poodle hybrids, such as the Cockapoo, had been popular for many years. Part of their attraction was the low to no shedding and allergy friendly (often referred to as hypoallergenic) qualities of these mixed breeds. Apparently some people believed there was a need for larger breeds with these same qualities. 

Names: Though Goldendoodle has become the most recognized name for this breed, it has also been known as Golden Poos, Goldie Poos, or Groodles.  The most popular name is attributed to a family in the United States who, around the year 1992, coined the word to describe the breed and differentiate it from a very similar looking hybrid called the Labradoodle.

Groups:  There are several designations given to the particular breeding cross of the parent dogs. For example, a first generation using purebred parents is called  F1.  Below are explanations of some of the categories.

F1 = Golden Retriever x Poodle 

F1B = F1 Goldendoodle x Poodle 

F2 = F1 Goldendoodle x F1 Goldendoodle

Multigen = Two Goldendoodle parents - One parent  has to be an F1B or multigen. A Poodle bred to a  multigen Goldendoodle also constitutes a multigen.

Physical Characteristics: Though many consider this breed to be low or non-shedding , there is no guarantee that any particular coat will shed any more or less than other varieties. The Goldendoodle has a beautiful long coat that may come in a variety of colors. It is soft in texture and can be straight, wavy, or loosely curled. Through surveys, it has been determined that even the low shedding Goldendoodles have proven to be hypo-allergenic for most allergy sufferers.

Care:  The Goldendoodle lives for human companionship and therefore should live indoors with access to an outside area for play. It enjoys outdoor activities and exercise. The coat should be brushed perhaps twice weekly.
