German Wirehaired Pointer Information
Overview: The German Wirehaired Pointer is a hunting dog with lots of energy and playfulness. This dog is somewhat friendly with other dogs and is pretty good around different animals. It is an affectionate and protective dog that would work well as a watchdog. The German Wirehaired Pointer can resist both cold and hot environments relatively well.
Temperament: Both a good companion and a formidable hunter the German Wirehaired Pointer has the energy to play and hunt for hours on end. If this breed isn't given enough exercise daily it can become destructive. If a stranger enters the premises it will be suspicious and perhaps even threatening to the stranger. This dog works best having access to the outdoors.
History: With a large increase in hunting as a sport people wanted a dog that could hunt no matter the environment. That is exactly the purpose for which the German Wirehaired Pointer was made. The most important ancestor to this breed was the Pudelpointer which was then mixed with the German Shorthaired Pointer, Griffon, Stichelhaar, and the Polish Water Dog to create a very versatile hunting dog that could hunt on any terrain and would be able to swim to catch fowl that had fallen in lakes. The breed was once called Drahthaar in Germany, however the breed did not become popular until the early 20th century which is about the same time that this breed reached the United States.
Names: The German Wirehaired Pointer is known by four other names: the Deutscher Drahthaariger, the Vorstehund, the German Pointer (Wirehaired), and the Drahthaar.
Groups: The German Wirehaired Pointer was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1959 and assigned to the Sporting Group.
Physical Characteristics: The German Wirehaired Pointer's average adult height is between 22 and 26 inches while it can weigh from 45 to 75 lb. The outer coat of this breed is weather resistant and somewhat water proof. This coat is straight, rough, thin and lays flat against the undercoat with a length of between 1 to 2 inches. The undercoat is thick enough to protect against any chill getting to the body of the dog. The colors of the canine are brown and white, solid brown, and black with white.
Care: This dog must get enough exercise during the day to stay busy and lose the excess energy that is pent up inside. This dog does best living by its owner's side indoors and having the outside available to it. The German Wirehaired Pointer should be brushed once a week.
