| Overview: The German Shorthaired Pointer is an affectionate and friendly canine that loves to play and stay active with its high amount of energy. This dog gets along well with other dogs and somewhat well with other animals. This breed would make an excellent watchdog and has decent protection abilities. The German Shorthaired Pointer doesn't need a lot of grooming and can resist both cold and hot environments. |
| Temperament: This dog enjoys running around all day and then spending the evening resting with its owner. The German Shorthaired Pointer can get restless and agitated when not given enough attention and exercise. It can be over whelming for small children to play with, so older children would be recommended. Unless this dog was raised with small animals it may try to hunt them if introduced later in its life. This dog may bark a lot if untrained. |
| History: During the 17th century the combination of the Spanish Pointer and the Hannover Hound resulted in the English Pointer dog which was to be the best hunting dog of its time. However there were still some minor faults so the breed would still be mixed and experimented with until the early 19th century when two Deutsch Kurzhaars (the original name of the German Shorthaired Pointer) proved to be the best at a dog derby in Germany. The first German Shorthaired Pointers to reach the United States was early in the 20th century. |
| Names: The German Shorthaired Pointer has four other names by which it is commonly known: the German Pointer (Shorthaired), the Deutscher, the Kurzhaariger Vortsehund, and the Kurzhaar. |
| Groups: The German Shorthaired Pointer was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1930 and assigned to the Sporting Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: The average height of the German Shorthaired Pointer can be between 21 inches and 25 inches and can weigh between 45 to 70 lb. The coat on this breed consists of short hair that is dense and feels rough on the hands. This coat comes in solid brown, brown with white spots, or black with white spots. |
| Care: Endowed with a large amount of energy, the German Shorthaired Pointer requires it to be used on a daily basis which means that this breed needs to be exercised often and in large amounts. The best living condition for this dog would be to live inside with the ability to go outside daily. The only grooming that is needed for the German Shorthaired Pointer would be a light brushing occasionally for removing loose hair. |
