| Dogue de Bordeaux Information |
| Overview: The Dogue de Bordeaux, considered to be of French origin by some is a molossoid (mastiff) type of canine; the French word dogue meaning mastiff. Starting at an early age, this breed requires extensive socialization and lengthy obedience training. Given these, this breed can make a fine companion and working dog that can also be good with children of at least school age. It tends to drool so new owners should be prepared for that. |
| Temperament: The Dogue de Bordeaux will bark, but usually only when provoked or for some compelling reason. Some lines have a high prey drive and should not be left alone with children or other pets. It can make an excellent companion dog as it is very loyal and will respond affectionately to the affection offered. |
| History: There is a fair amount of speculation about the origin of the Dogue de Bordeaux. Some believe it dates back several thousand years. However, the earliest references to the breed predate the French Revolution of the late 19th Century when most ownership was among the aristocracy. These people used them for a variety of purposes including guard dog, bull and bear baiting, boar hunting and livestock herding. Many of the breed were eliminated during the revolution as the noble class was put to death. However, some survived and by 1863 reference of the Dogue de Bordeaux was made at a dog show in Jardin d'Acclimatation in Paris, France. During the 19th Century, there were three types of this mastiff, all named after the region of and purpose of their breeding: Bordeaux, Paris and Toulouse. There was little conformity between these breeds, but eventually the mixture of these three with the Bordeaux type predominant resulted in the current day breed standard. The French Mastiff, as it is also called, remained a little known canine until 1989 when it was featured as the companion dog to a policeman in the movie Turner and Hooch. Since that time, interest in the breed has grown. |

| Physical Characteristics: Muscular, powerful, built relatively close to the ground with a massive head and serious expression, the French Bulldog is imposing. Its coat is soft to the touch and short consisting of short, fine hair. The most common color is a dark red fawn but can vary to much lighter shades. It may or may not have a mask. |
| Care: Light brushing once each week is adequate care for the coat. Bathing every other week helps abate odors. Skin folds on the head should be tended to, also. Regular ear cleaning should be part of the dog's care. The eyes must be wiped with a damp cloth several times each day. The Dogue de Bordeaux has low tolerance for heat and should be kept inside during warmer weather. |
