Dalmatian Information

Overview:  The Dalmatian, easily recognized as it is the only dog breed with a spotted coat, has superior endurance, speed and is very smart. Additionally, it exhibits a relatively high level of energy, is very affectionate and quite friendly toward other pets, other dogs and even strangers. The Dalmatian is receptive to training and a natural coach dog, one of its unique talents. It has also been effectively used in a variety of other tasks such as sentinel, shepherd, ratter, draft dog, retriever, bird dog, circus dog among others.
Temperament:  This multi-talented canine can be somewhat stubborn, but can be a wonderful companion animal. Its need for daily vigorous exercise must be met in order to keep it happy and well-behaved. Its energy and drive may be too much for small children.
History:  Little is known about the actual origins and nativity of the breed. Apparently named after the area of Dalmatia in the country of Yugoslavia, there is little evidence showing that that as its actual area of genesis. It is believed that its ancestors existed anciently. As it is the only canine with an inbred talent for following coaches, it was a very popular breed for work related to protecting horses from marauding dogs. It became well known as the fire dog as it was a popular coach dog for horse drawn fire engines. Though its popularity waned with the advent of the automobile age, the Disney movies such as 101 Dalmatians reignite interest in the breed from time to time.
Names:  The Dalmatian is not known by any other name.
Groups:  The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Dalmatian breed in the year 1888 assigning it to the Non-Sporting Group.
Physical Characteristics:  Aside from its spotted coat, the Dalmatian is square-proportioned, sturdy boned, trim and athletic in appearance. Its spotted coat is short, dense, glossy and sleek, made up of white background with either liver or black spots. The spots should be round in size from roughly a dime to a half dollar. The breed stands from 19 to 23 inches high with weight ranging from 40 to 60 lb.
Care:  Though the coat of the Dalmatian needs little care, periodic brushing will remove dead hair. Its need for daily exercise is important. The exercise should be vigorous including running, and playing for lengthy periods. Living indoors is preferred, though it can stay outdoors with shelter and soft bedding. Human companionship is very important to this breed, so living in the owner's house with access to a yard for outside time suits its need.
