| Overview: The Chinese Crested is a small toy dog, fine-boned and unique in appearance as it can be almost hairless or covered with double-soft hair. It is very friendly toward other dogs, other pets and even strangers, though it does have good watchdog abilities. Not an outdoor living dog, it nevertheless enjoys playing outside in a protected area during warm weather.. |
| Temperament: Both happy and alert, the Chinese Crested makes a wonderful companion dog as it enjoys the roles of lap dog, playful elf and mood sensitive friend. Toward its family, it exhibits a high level of devotion and is willing to please its owner. |
| History: Though not clearly traceable, the history of this canine appears to go as far back as the 13th Century. It is believed that Chinese traders kept them on ships to help keep vermin populations at bay. They would trade the diminutive dogs at ports of call which helped distribute the breed in such far off lands as the Middle East, South Africa and perhaps Central and South America. Eventually, they made their way to Europe in the 19th Century. Gradually, the Chinese Crested gained a foothold in the hearts of people and grew in popularity among dog show enthusiasts after breed club recognition. However, it has been slow to catch on among pet owners but is gaining ground, especially as allergy symptomatic people seek out dogs that shed very little for pets. |

| Groups: After a century of effort, the Chinese Crested breed was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in the year 1991 as a member of the Toy Group. | Toy Group.
| Physical Characteristics: Slender, small, and graceful, the Chinese Crested stand 11 to 13 inches high with a weight varying from 5 to 12 lb., a bit longer than it is tall. The Hairless variety has no hair on its soft and smooth body but does have silky hair on its head, lower legs and feet and two-thirds of the tail. The Powderpuff variety has moderate length, soft, silky hair over its entire body and tail. The colors of coats can be of any combination. |
| Care: As the Chinese Crested, especially those without hair, are sensitive to cold and their skin is subject to sunburn, owners should be careful to see that their skin is covered sufficiently to provide warmth and protection. This is an indoor breed and its regular exercise needs can be met with simply running and playing vigorously within the house. They are known to climb and jump. The Powderpuffs need frequent coat brushing and the muzzle hair needs clipping or shaving twice each month. Hairless breeds benefit from application of skin moisturizers and bathing to fend off blackheads.. |
