Overview: While the Briewer Yorkie may be friendly and energetic, it needs to be shown who the leader is. It accepts training relatively well as it aims to please and likes to be introduced to new things. Exercise is important to this dog and will let you know when it needs to do more. It is loyal to its master and loves to be around friends. It does well when with other pets and dogs if it has been raised properly.

Temperament: This breed is adventurous and energetic for its small size. When the owner takes the time to understand how to treat this dog, it can make a wonderful friend and companion. If it is not taught to respect people, it may act suspicious and even aggressive to others. It should never be given the opportunity to take charge as it will believe it is in control and will start acting like a king. While often easy to train, if the owner doesn't give the dog appropriate boundaries it may become stubborn and not want to learn.

History: For the Biewer Yorkie there exist at least two schools of thought regarding the purity of the breed. One line of thought is presented here. The Briewer Yorkie was first a recessive gene that would happen when two Yorkshire Terriers would produce puppies. It was in the early 1980's that it was first introduced in Germany by a certain man named Werner Biewer. The puppy with this gene was named Schneefloeckchen von Friedheck, meaning Snowflake. The Sire of this pup was Darling von Friedheck, the Dam; Fru-Fru von Friedheck. Both of these dogs had achieved FCI World Junior Champion in the same competition in Dortmund in 1981. Biewer, finding this breed to be beautiful, started to do selective breeding to produce a new line of Yorkshire Terrier. The Yorkshire Terrier and the Briewer Yorkie are considered to be two separate breeds these days. Some American breeders are bringing the Biewer Yorkie and the Yorkshire Terrier together again, much to the disagreement of the Briewer breeders saying that reverting it back to its origins isn't allowed since they are two separate breeds now. The BTCA has changed the standard and the name of the Briewer Yorkie to Biewer Terrier, the new standard allowing for undocked tails and black coats. Not many breeders are happy with these changes and would prefer the original standards.

Names: The Biewer Yorkie is also known as the Biewer Terrier, Biewer a'la Pom Pon, Biewer Yorkshire and the Biewer Yorkie Terrier.

Physical Characteristics: The Biewer Yorkie looks to be a Toy Terrier with long hair. The average adult can be about 8.5 inches and can weigh around 7 lb. with no difference between the males and females. The main difference in appearance between the Biewer Terrier and the Yorkshire Terrier is coloration. Biewers always include a fair amount of white hair patches with other areas of more traditional Yorkie coloration. White is not an acceptable color on the Yorkshire Terrier.

Care: The Biewer Yorkie can live inside a house at all times if given enough exercise. It will usually get all it needs by playing inside, but if this dog needs it, playing outside can't hurt. A daily walk can also do for exercise requirements. Keep in mind that if it doesn't go out for walks every once in a while it may start to behave differently and even inappropriately. Human companionship is an important part of the Biewer Yorkie life.
