| Overview: The Belgian Sheepdog is energetic, easily trained and alert with a proud elegant appearance. This breed is relatively comfortable in most climates. Though playful, it is not known as an affectionate dog. It works as a stock herding dog as well as watchdog and protector. Known to be relatively friendly with other dogs and pets, its guard dog instincts make it very wary of and even unfriendly toward strangers. |
| Temperament: Bred to be protective of home and family, the Belgian Sheepdog is alert and intensely watchful. It enjoys playing but must be kept active to burn off energy. Though independent minded, it will respond to being called. |
| History: The Groenendael, or Belgian Sheepdog, was one of several varieties of Belgian Shepherd dogs that eventually were divided into four distinct breeds. Its long black coat distinguished it from the other breeds. The name Groenendael was chosen giving credit to the kennel name that had specialized the breeding since the 1890s. Some police forces in the United States were already employing this breed as police dogs. During World War I, the breed was relied upon in the battlefield for pulling machine guns, message delivery and ambulance dogs. The Belgian Sheepdog is also recognized as a service dog as it does well with therapy, guide and rescue work. |

| Groups: The American Kennel Club classifies the Belgian Sheepdog with the Herding Group, having recognized the breed in 1912. |
| Physical Characteristics: Square-proportioned, strong, agile, with moderately heavy bone structure, one will most often find this breed herding livestock. It appears to do so effortlessly with its smooth gait making wide sweeping circles and can do so for hours without fatigue. Most often pure black, some white markings are acceptable. The average height is from 22" to 26" with a weight of 40 to 75 lb. with the female generally smaller than the male. |
| Care: Provided substantial exercise and tasks, the Belgian Sheepdog can thrive in both urban and country settings. Its long black coat requires at least weekly brushing, more often is better. As a herding dog, this breed needs room to roam during the day. At night, it enjoys being inside with its family but can live outside in environments that are not too extreme. |
