Overview: The Yorkshire Terrier is a very small, playful and energetic dog. It doesn't need much in the way of exercise. Other dogs and pets don't do well around this breed. It may be reserved around strangers until it gets to know them making this dog a great watchdog as it will announce when there are visitors. The Yorkie doesn't make a very good guard dog and shouldn't be expected to act like one. Grooming takes patience and dedication as it will need brushing every other day. It doesn't like the cold very much and is somewhat resistant to warm temperatures.

Temperament: Although it is a small dog, the Yorkshire Terrier is not easily intimidated by larger dogs. It loves to explore and is curious. It is bold and stubborn making it a challenge to get along well with other dogs and animals. While some do tend to bark, it can be taught not to.

History: While this breed doesn't look like it, the Yorkshire Terrier is both a working and a ratter dog. A mixed breeding of many English Terriers possibly including the Waterside Terrier, Clydesdale Terrier, and others, the Yorkshire Terrier came to be in Yorkshire England during the 19th century. Of all the breeds that were mixed to make this dog, the Waterside Terrier was perhaps one of the more dominating of the traits for its rather long hair, and small weight. The Waterside Terrier was brought by Weavers that came from Scotland. The higher class looked down on this dog at first as it came from humble roots. It wasn't long, though, before the Yorkie was entered into show rings and then admired by the upper classes of society for its beauty. By the end of the 19th century, this breed had reached the United States. However there was a lot of confusion as the Yorkie varied in size. Not long after it made it to the United States it was decided that the smaller of the breed were favored over the large. Today the Yorkshire Terrier is known as one of the smallest terriers.

Names: There is no other name the Yorkshire Terrier is known by. It is, however, commonly referred to by the nickname Yorkie.

Groups: The Yorkshire Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885 and assigned to the Toy Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Yorkshire Terrier can be 8 to 9 inches in height and can weigh about 7 lb. with no difference between the males and females. A long haired toy is perhaps a good description as it is just that. The Yorkie’s body is compact and well proportioned. The coat is glossy and silk-like to the touch. The hair is both long and straight.

Care: While the Yorkie does seem to entertain and exercise itself, it does need human interaction in the form of a game or other activity. A short walk is nice with a chance to explore a little. This dog cannot survive outside and should live inside with access to the outdoors. The coat needs to be combed every other day.
