| Welsh Terrier Information |
Overview: The Welsh Terrier likes to play and have fun with its master. It gets along well with other dogs, but it doesn't like other pets and strangers. It can be a bit difficult when training as it doesn't have the patience to learn much. This breed makes as a great watchdog, however it has poor protection capabilities. Grooming can be a little time consuming and needs to have a dedicated hand. It is fairly resistant to both cold and warm temperatures. Temperament: Even though the Welsh Terrier is more mild-mannered than other terriers it is still considered to be mischievous and playful enough to provide entertainment. It is still calm and obedient enough to serve as a good house pet. This dog is shy around strangers and might get into fights with other pets and dogs. If not kept occupied from time to time, some may dig and bark. History: Wales has only two different Terriers that hail from its land, one of which is the Welsh Terrier. It is believed that the old black and tan rough Terrier that was popular in Britain is one of the ancestors to the Welsh Terrier. By the end of the 18th century there was a breed of dog running around in North Wales known as the Ynysfor. Around this same time there was a breed being created known as the “Old English Broken-Haired”Terrier. These two breeds were so similar that in dog shows one could easily be passed as the other and in many cases these two breeds were classified as one. As time went on both strains became known as the Welsh Terrier regardless of where they hailed from. Both breeds had similar histories and were used for hunting rodents. In the 1880s the EKC recognized the breed. The first of the breed were too rough to be in competitive shows leading the breeders to start looking for solutions to make its temperament more mellow. This goal was partly achieved by breeding it with the Wire Fox Terrier. The ending result was a dog that looked like a smaller version of the Airedale Terrier. It started to fair well in shows and became very competitive. For some reason it has never scored among the highest in the shows. Names: There is no other name the Welsh Terrier is known by. Groups: The Welsh Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1888 and assigned to the Terrier Group. Physical Characteristics: The average adult Welsh Terrier can be 15 to 15.5 inches in height and can be about 20 lb. in weight with no difference between the males and females. The breed is sturdy and compact, measuring within the medium sized range. The outer layer of its double coat is hard and thick, fitting closely with a thin jacket. The undercoat is short and soft. Care: A moderate sized walk daily should be enough exercise for this breed. The Welsh Terrier also loves to run so it should live in a safe environment as it tends to hunt if it can. It can live outside during warm weather but should really be kept inside during colder months. The jacket of the coat should be combed about three times a week with shaping either by clipping or stripping every three months. |
