| Tibetan Terrier Information |
Overview: The Tibetan Terrier is an affectionate and playful medium size dog with enough energy that it needs to have a moderate amount of exercise daily. It gets along well enough with other dogs and pets, and doesn't seem to mind strangers all that much once it gets to know them. It isn't difficult to train into being a good watchdog. However it doesn't have an affinity for guarding and shouldn't be used as such. Grooming needs a dedicated and patient owner. It is fairly resistant to both cold and hot temperatures. Temperament: A dependable and pleasant companion to have around, the Tibetan Terrier is gentle and kind both indoors and outside. It likes to go outside for a run just as much as it likes taking a nap inside. It is intelligent and sometimes mischievous. It loves its master and its family and is good around them. History: It is a mystery as to when and how this breed from Tibet was created, however it has been recorded to be at least 2,000 years old. Primarily bred for family companionship, on occasion it may have worked in the fields and helped herd animals. This little terrier was often presented as a gift to visitors to bring the sojourner luck during his or her travels back home. Myths and speculative stories about the origins of the Tibetan Terrier abound. This breed was not sold, but given as gifts of gratitude. It was around 1920 that an Indian physician, Dr. A. Grieg, received one in gratitude for rendering medical treatment. This man became interested in the breed shortly after this and started to get others and started a breeding program. The Tibetan Terrier first became a recognized breed in India. By 1937, it could be found entered into dog shows in England. It then was brought into the United States in the mid-20th century and about twenty years later was accepted into the AKC. Although it is called a Terrier, this breed is only called that because of its size, and not because it is truly a Terrier. Names: The Tibetan Terrier is also known as the Dhokhi Apso. Groups: The Tibetan Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1973 and assigned to the Non-Sporting Group. Physical Characteristics: The average adult Tibetan Terrier can be 15 to 16 inches in height and can weigh between 20 and 24 lb. with no difference between the male and females. Over the years in Tibet, this agile breed has developed a double coat. The Undercoat is soft and has a wool-like texture, while the profuse, long outer coat consists of fine hair. The foot construction is considered to be unique as it is quite large, flat and round creating a snowshoe effect. This allows for ease in traveling over challenging terrain. It is of medium size with a powerful build and proportionally square. Care: The Tibetan Terrier is a curious and adventurous breed. It needs to have daily exercise met with either a long walk or vigorous games. It is best if it lives indoors with people and has access to the outdoors. Brushing and combing twice a week is needed for its coat. |
