Overview: The Giant Schnauzer is a high energy, high maintenance breed that needs plenty of exercise and a little grooming every week. This dog doesn't get along well with other animals or dogs and certainly doesn't like strangers, however that could be why it is a very good watchdog and protector. The Giant Schnauzer can live in cold and hot environments comfortably.

Temperament: Feeling quite loyal to its owner, this dog will protect against any threat that it sees. It doesn't do well with young children as it doesn't know how to play easy with them, though it tries to protect them. The Giant Schnauzer doesn't like being around other dogs very much and needs to be trained to tell the difference between family and a threat. It catches on quickly and will stay loyal to those people. It may try to become the leader when on walks.

History: Wanting a larger breed of Schnauzer to herd and protect their cattle, the people of Bavaria, Germany started to cross breed the Schnauzer with other dogs of larger size and herding capabilities to create the perfect herding dog. The end result of these experiments resulted in the Munchener (the original name for the Giant Schnauzer), however it is unknown as to when this breed originated as there few records about the breeding process. This breed was used for more than just herding, however, as it also was used for butchers, stockyard, and brewery guard dogs. Before World War I started the Giant Schnauzer was being considered as a police force dog for Germany. Today, it functions as a police dog in Germany almost exclusively. In the United States, it is more commonly kept as a pet.

Names: The Giant Schnauzer is also known as the Riesenschnauzer, primarily in its native country of Germany.

Groups: The Giant Schnauzer was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1930 and assigned to the Working Group.

Physical Characteristics: The adult Giant Schnauzer can have a height between 23.5 and 27.5 inches with a weight of 65 to 90 lb. The coat of this breed is hard and thin with very thick hair that covers a very soft undercoat. The colors of the coat can be solid black, or peppered black, gray, and white.

Care: This breed doesn't need much when it comes to maintenance. It needs daily exercise and fun as well as playing games. This dog can live outside, however it's best if it lives inside and has access to the outdoors. The Giant Schnauzer needs to be brushed once or twice weekly however the coat needs to be shaped two to four times a year.
