Samoyed Information

Overview: The Samoyed is a dog with a fair amount of energy and a lot of playfulness. It loves to be around its owner and likes to show it often. It gets along well with other breeds and loves to be with other animals. Strangers aren't a problem for this breed as it likes them once it's used to them. It may not be very easy to train this dog so some patience may be needed. It can make an excellent watchdog, however its protective abilities are lacking. Frequent grooming is necessary to which the owner needs to be dedicated. It does very well against cold weather but has issues when in hot climates.

Temperament: This breed is very gentle and loves to play making it an ideal dog to be around children. The Samoyed likes most people and other pets. It needs to have daily exercise to keep itself occupied and not get into trouble as it is very clever and sometimes mischievous. If it is bored it will start to dig and even bark. It may try to herd young children.

History: The Samoyed people were a group of nomads who came from Northwestern Siberia from Central Asia. These people would herd reindeer around the land so the animals could find food to sustain the herd and provide food for the nomads. They would use Spitz dogs to help with both herding the group and for protecting the reindeer from anything dangerous in the Arctic tundra. This Spitz would also help with hunting bears, towing boats and even sleds for their masters during their travels. Another job this breed had was to keep the children warm at night by lying next to them. The first of the Samoyed people arrived in England during the 19th century and with them so did the dogs. During this time the breed wasn't always pure white like it is today. Queen Alexandria received one from this breed and she vigorously promoted it. Many of the Samoyed dogs of today can trace their ancestry back to her dog. In the early 20th century this breed made it into the United States. Around this time the Samoyed breed was becoming popular as a sled dog as it was more tractable than others. During the early 20th century this breed became one of the first to reach the South Pole through one of the expeditions sent there. Soon the popularity of the breed began to rise and has risen even faster after World War II. Although the Samoyed people have settled and now live in one place, the Samoyed breed can be found in many areas of the world.

Names: The Samoyed is also known as the Samoyedskaya.

Groups: The Samoyed was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1906 and assigned to the Working Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Samoyed can be 19 to 23.5 inches in height and can weigh between 35 and 65 lb. It is strong and agile with excellent speed and endurance. This dog has a double coat. The undercoat covers the body with soft, dense, and short wool like hair while the outer coat is rough that stands out straight. The colors that the breed is seen in are pure white, white and biscuit, cream, or full biscuit.

Care: Very active, the Samoyed needs to get exercise daily. A long walk or a good sized jog ought to do it for this dog. Even a vigorous playing session should help to burn its energy. Cold weather is its ideal living condition. It is recommended that the Samoyed lives indoors and has access to the outdoors. The coat on this dog needs to be brushed and combed three times a week, daily when shedding.
