Saluki Information

Overview: The Saluki is a breed that likes to play and exercise daily. It enjoys being around its owner. This dog gets along well with other dog breeds and other pets. It tends to be reserved around strangers. The Saluki is fairly easy to train as it responds well to new things and likes to learn. It can make an excellent watchdog, however it lacks in protective abilities. Grooming requirements are minimal. This dog doesn't do very well in cold environments, but doesn't seem to mind warmer and even hot climates.

Temperament: The Saluki doesn't like to be around strangers and will be reserved around them. It is very loyal to its owner but doesn't always demonstrate it. While it does well around children it may not be as playful as children may want it to be. It doesn't like to play rough and doesn't deal well when it is punished harshly. Inside it is very quiet and likes to find warm spots to rest in. Outside it runs very quickly and likes to chase small animals or fast moving things. It may ignore its owner when it is being called.

History: This canine is considered to be one of the most ancient of domestic dog breeds. There is evidence of this dog in Egyptian tombs dating well into the B.C. era. The name of the Saluki may have derived from the ancient civilization of Seleucia. Arabian Nomads used this dog to hunt fast game from the Gazelle to hare that were native to the area. Often this dog would hunt with falcons that nomads had tamed. Though the Muslim religion considered dogs to be an unclean animal, the Saluki was excluded from this class and was known as the Noble One. Credited as the main reason the nomads captured meat for meals, this breed was allowed to sleep in their tents and receive constant attention. This dog was not allowed to breed with any other type of dog so as to preserve its purity. Because of the area the nomads traveled the Saluki was brought to many places and even distributed to other nations. Around the 20th century, it was brought to the United States. Not more the 30 years later the AKC accepted the breed. When hunting with guns became more popular in this canine’s native land, its need and numbers have diminished. It is more commonly used as a show and companion dog these days, however it is still used for hare coursing.

Names: The Saluki is also known as the Gazelle Hound, and the Persian Greyhound.

Groups: The Saluki was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1929 and assigned to the Hound Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Saluki can be 23 to 28 inches in height and can weigh between 35 and 65 lb. with no size difference between male and female. The coat of this breed is smooth and soft like silk in texture. It can be white, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle, tan, black and tan, or tri in color.

Care: Daily exercise is needed to keep this canine in shape and happy. A good jog or a long walk should do nicely. This dog should sleep inside with access to the outdoors so it can run and play during the day. It can be outside for short periods during cold and even snowy weather. A soft bed is recommended for this dog as it can develop callouses if sleeping on hard surfaces. The Saluki is a thin looking breed to begin with. It may be a picky eater so choosing a good diet is important to maintain good weight. Occasional brushing is needed to remove any fallen and dead hairs, however any feathering on the coat needs to be combed twice a week.
