South African Boerboel Information

Overview: The Boerboel is a protective and dedicated breed that wants only what is best for its master. It should get along well with others as long as they aren't deemed a threat or treading on this dog's territory. It needs a lot of room to play and use up its energy. It is a great guard dog if trained to be so.

Temperament: A breed with energy and intelligenced, the Boerboel must have adequate amounts of exercise or it may try to entertain itself in a less pleasing way. A very loyal dog, it will protect its master and family very well if taught too, or it may be over protective. If there is no training involved with this dog it will be stubborn and misbehave. Often sensitive with the environment and emotions brought about by its master, it will try to comfort when someone is sad.

History: The Boerboel’s name comes from the dutch word farmer. So, in effect, this dog’s true name is Farmer's Dog. The Boerboel is the only South African breed created to defend its master’s home. While there is much history about this breed, it is uncertain as to what breeds were used and how many there were in producing this it. A common belief is that the Boerboel is a mix of native African breeds and dogs brought from Dutch, French and British settlers. The most solid history is of Jan van Riebeeck arriving in the Cape during the 1650's bringing a Bullenbijter with him. Those that came with this man, and those that arrived later all brought large and strong dogs. It is then believed that these dogs were bred with native African breeds. In the 20th century the diamond mining company De Beers brought Bullmastiffs to South Africa for guarding purposes. This breed was also mixed with the Boerboels. These days, breeding Boerboel dogs is both a hobby and an industry in South Africa. The dogs are exported for money. In 2010 the Boerboel was labeled a fighting dog in Denmark and outlawed. Many people seek after the protective abilities of this dog and it is one of the most popular when it comes to this kind of job.

Names: The Boerboel is also known as the South African Boerboel and the South African Mastiff.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Boerboel can be about 23 to 27 inches and can weigh between 110 and 175 lb. It is considered to be a giant dog breed, outclassing the Rottweiler and the Doberman Piinscher regardless of them all being the same weight, but not as large as a Great Dane. This dog wears a short but smooth coat.

Care: This breed needs to have a good amount of exercise each day, both physically and mentally. It this is not done it may become destructive and unhappy with its master. A good sized walk and a long playing session should be good for this dog. Also it should have access to a large and protected area so it can run around and explore. Obedience training would be good for the Boerboel so it can learn what it can and cannot do or it may become too protective and stubborn. Socializing at a young age would be good so it can get used to people.
