Overview: The Pekingese is a breed that doesn't like too much excitement in a day. It doesn't have a lot of energy that needs to be used up and doesn't need much in the way of exercise. This canine does get along well with other dogs and animals. It is not particularly fond of strangers. Training this dog can be difficult. The Pekingese makes a great watchdog, but wouldn't make an adequate guard dog. Grooming needs daily attention. It is somewhat resistant to the cold and can't take much heat.

Temperament: The Pekingese is considered a courageous dog that won't fight unless it is engaged. It seems to not care about people it doesn't know and would rather not deal with them. While it is very loyal to its owner it doesn't do much to show it. It doesn't mind playing a bit but it really doesn't play enough to entertain someone.

History: The Pekingese is connected to the Lamaist form of Buddhism in China. In this form the lion is an exalted symbol that sometimes appears in a smaller form. The Foo dogs at the time of its creation looked like lions and were continually bred to look more like the lion. In time this breed was known as the lion dog. This breeding continued under the watchful eyes of the palace eunuchs. This breed was treated quite literally like royalty between 700 and 1000 A.D. Personal servants would feed, bathe, and pamper them every day. The smaller version of the breed, called Sleeve Dogs, would be carried in the sleeves of its master. In the mid-19th century, England attacked and looted the Imperial Summer. Among the treasures that were found there were five Pekingese that were taken back to England. One of the dogs taken to England was presented to Queen Victoria. This dog sparked interest among the dog fanciers in England and the demand for thie breed rose, albeit rather slowly. For a long time the Pekingese was reserved for the wealthy. After some time the breed became more common and is now considered to be over-populated in some areas. Today's role for the Pekingese is that of a companion and show dog.

Groups: The Pekingese was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1906 and assigned to the Toy Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Pekingese can be 6 to 9 inches in height and can weigh up to 14 lb.
The profuse coat is long and should be rough to the touch. The undercoat is dense and soft while the outer coat is straight and hard.

Care: A slow and relaxing walk outside should do for the daily exercise. Keeping it away from hot environments is very important as it can die from heat prostration. Warm weather is about all it can handle but it is best to keep it in cool conditions. It should live inside and have access to the outdoors during cold temperatures. The coat will mat unless it is combed at least once a week. The fold over the nose should be cleaned daily to prevent any infection from starting. The coat around the anus should also be inspected daily for any soiling that may be there. Pekingese tend to snore when sleeping.
