Overview: The Newfoundland is a playful and somewhat energetic dog that shows a lot of affection towards its owner. It gets along really well with other animals and dogs as well as with strangers. This breed is fairly easy to train and can make a good watchdog and great guard dog. is very resistant to the cold and not very tolerant to the heat.

Temperament: Although it is considered very sweet and gentle to most people and animals, if its owner is threatened it can turn into a fearless protector doing what it can to help. Known to be a friend to all, this is a very gentle giant.

History: The Newfoundland dog was first bred on the coast of Newfoundland. Unfortunately that is about as much solid history that was recorded. It is still unknown as to when it was first bred and what was used to make it the way it is today. It is believed that Tibetan Mastiffs are included in this breed’s ancestory but there are no records of that breed being brought to Newfoundland. In 1662 a group of Roougnoust settled in Newfoundland with some Great Pyrenees dogs and it is said by some that the genes of the Tibetan Mastiff were brought through the Pyrenees dogs brought at that time. These dogs were bred with Black English Retrievers at some point. It is also believed that some Husky genes may exist inside the Newfoundland breed.  Whether all this is true or not, in the end it resulted in a breed that loves water, is resistant to the cold, with solid black or a black and white coat (known as Landseer). This breed was used for many purposes in the water like pulling nets and saving the lives of people who had fallen in. It wasn't a water only dog, however, as it was used for drafting. People that visited from Europe were very impressed with this breed, so much so that many of them took some back with them and it was through these people that the first one entered dog shows. With the dogs being exported and with a law that limited one dog per household, this breed started to dwindle in Newfoundland, meaning Europe had more of the Newfoundland dogs than its place of origin. Not long after this the breed was brought to the United States through dog fanciers. After World War II the Newfoundlands of Europe were practically decimated and those that had been brought to America were used to replenish the stock in Europe. With both countries restocked fully the Newfoundland became one of the more popular giant breeds.

Names: The Newfoundland name applies to the breed in general. Those of the black and white coat are call Landseers.

Groups: The Newfoundland was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1886 and assigned to the Working Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Newfoundland can be 26 to 28 inches in height and can weigh 100 to 150 lb. The double coat consists of an outer water resistant coat which lies flat against the body and the soft, thick undercoat. The colors of the coat can be black, brown, gray, or white with black.

Care: Daily exercise is recommended to keep this dog fit and use up its energy. This can be done through a good walk or active playing. This dog loves to swim in water, the colder the better. It will try to avoid warm weather and should only be put outside when cool. It should live inside with the owner where it can be sociable but it should have access to the outdoors. Its coat should be combed twice a week and more often when the dog is shedding. The Newfoundland does tend to drool and can be a messy drinker.
