Overview: The Moyen Poodle has a large amount of energy and a very playful attitude. It loves to around its owner. This dog gets along with other dog breeds and likes other animals. Strangers make this canine nervous at first, but once it gets over being nervous it is friendly towards people it doesn't know. The Moyen Poodle is easy to train as it loves to learn and catches on quickly. This breed can make an excellent watchdog, but doesn't do well as a guard dog. Grooming takes true determination on the owner’s part with this dog. The Moyen Poodle is somewhat resistant to cold weather and has good resistance towards hot environments.

Temperament: The Moyen Poodle is considered to be a very smart and easy to train dog. It is playful, energetic, and eager to please, but is also alert and focused. It is very loyal to its owner. Some may act nervous around strangers for a time.

History: Although the Poodle is associated with France its origins are probably in central Asia. The curly-coated dogs in that region would assist with the herding and would travel along the routes in and throughout Europe. There are several water dogs that were known to have rough coats that appear to be in the Poodle's ancestry. It is believed that the first Poodle was the Barbet. This dog was a curly haired breed that was found throughout France, Russia, Hungary, and several other places. It is the type that came from Germany that gained the most popularity among the people. Even the name Poodle comes from German word Pfudel, meaning puddle, or to splash. This was referencing the water talents of the Poodle. In France it is known as Caniche, or Chien Canard. Both of these names refer to the dog’s duck hunting abilities. The hair on the Poodle is usually cut away to imitate a swim suit while the puffs on the legs and tail are believed to represent the days it was used in the circus. This canine became popular with ladies of fashion and became a great companion to them. The French aristocracy found this breed favorable and made it the national dog of France. Poodles entered dog shows in the late 19th century. Some of the earlier Poodles used in the shows had corded coats. This fashion didn't last long however and was replaced with the bouffant styles still being used today.

Groups: Though the Poodle breed of various sizes was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1887, the Moyen Poodle is recognized more commonly in Europe breed clubs and is not a recognized breed size by AKC.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Moyen Poodle is about 14 to 18 inches in height. Its size is considered between the Standard Poodle and Miniature Poodle. The coat of this dog is either curly or corded. If it is curly, it is rough in texture and thick. If it is corded, it is in tight cords of various lengths. The colors of the coat can be blue, gray, silver, brown, cafe-au-lait, apricot, or a cream color. Each color listed can be in different shades. The coat is considered non-shedding.

Care: The Moyen Poodle requires a large amount of human interaction. It also needs to have a large amount of physical and mental exercise daily. It is recommended to do an obedience session followed by playing or taking the dog for a good walk every day. The Moyen Poodle shouldn't live outdoors. This dog needs to be brushed every day if it has long hair and weekly if it has short hair. The dead hair on this dog doesn't just fall out as it gets tangled in the rest of the hair and can cause matting.
