Overview: A very playful and high energy dog, the Miniature Pinscher loves to have fun with its owner. This breed doesn't get along well with other dogs or pets, and doesn't like the company of strangers. This dog isn't easy to train but it does make an excellent watchdog, however it doesn't do very well protecting. The Miniature Pinscher is easy to care for when it comes to grooming and it is resistant to the heat, but it doesn't so well with colder weather.

Temperament: The Miniature Pinscher is an extremely active and playful dog that needs to always be doing something. It is often considered stubborn and curious. It may cause fights with other dogs and may even go after small animals. The Miniature Pinscher is shy around strangers and tries to avoid them.

History: From its physical appearance, may seem that the Miniature Pinscher is just a smaller version of the Doberman Pinscher. However, it happens to be that the Miniature Pinscher actually came first. While the actual time of this breed's arrival is not known, there is a painting from the 17th century that depicts a dog greatly resembling the Min Pin. It is speculated that this dog is a mix of the German Pinscher, the Dachshund, and the Italian Greyhound. Many of the traits from these previously mentioned breeds are evident in the body structure of the Miniature Pinscher. Some believe it is the world’s most energetic dog. The original name of this breed was the Reh Pinscher as it resembled the small German roe deer and Pinscher means Terrier in the German language. In the late 19th century breeders strove to create the tiniest dogs, which in many cases led to disfigured breeds. However that changed in the 20th century when they strove for elegance once again. Before World War I the Miniature Pinscher was very competitive in dog shows but the breed was significantly reduced in numbers in Germany after the war. The only hope that this breed had for a robust increase in numbers was, perhaps, through the dogs that had been exported to other countries before the war took place. In the United States, the Miniature Pinscher's popularity grew quite well and was accepted into the AKC. The breed was named the King of Toys and is presently one of the most popular toy dogs.

Names: The Miniature Pinscher is also known as the Reh Pinscher and the Zwergpinscher. It is also often referred to by its nickname, Min Pin.

Groups: The Miniature Pinscher was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1925 and assigned to the Toy Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Miniature Pinscher can be 10 to 12.5 inches in height and can weigh 8 to 10 lb. This dog is a small, sturdy, well balanced with a smooth coat. The coat of this breed is smooth but tough and short. The colors of the coat can be solid red, stag red (black hairs within the red), black with rust markings on the cheeks, lips, jaw, neck, eyes and on the chest, and Brown with Rust markings.

Care: This dog requires a lot of exercise and active playtime. It doesn't do well in the cold and shouldn't be living outdoors in any weather, however having access to the outside is a plus. The only time the Miniature Pinscher's coat needs to be brushed is to remove any dead hairs that have accumulated over time.
