Overview: The Labrador Retriever is a very energetic dog that loves to play and show affection to its owner. This breed likes to be around other dogs, animals, and strangers. It can be easily trained to be a great watchdog but won't make a very effective protector. The Labrador Retriever doesn't require a lot of maintenance and it can also resist the cold very well while being able to withstand hot weather.

Temperament: A loyal and friendly canine, the Labrador Retriever is a great companion for both humans and animals alike. It behaves relatively well while indoors, stays active while playing with people, and is dedicated while hunting. This breed seems to love to learn tricks and works to please its owner. It is a powerful and talented swimmer and very good at retrieving. If the Labrador Retriever gets too bored it can cause problems.

History: The Labrador originated in Newfoundland for being an all-purpose water dog. This breed didn't always used to be called Labrador Retriever but instead was known as the Lesser Newfoundland or also as the St. John's Newfoundland. This dog didn't only retrieve birds and land small land animals but also fish and other sea animals, pulled fishing boats through water, and helped its owner with any swimming needs. Sadly this dog died out in Newfoundland largely because of a dog tax that was placed on the people. However, before that happened, some of the Labrador Retriever breed had been brought to England during the 19th century. Using the remaining few of the breed mixed with other dogs brought the Labrador Retriever back from endangerment. In England this breed gained reputation in retrieving game. Originally this dog was only to be found with coats the colors of chocolate and culled yellow. In the early 20th century there were other colors that became common and accepted though black was still the most sought after. The EKC accepted the Labrador in 1903 and the AKC accepted this breed in 1917. Growing in popularity, it eventually became the most sought after breed in the United State around the end of the 20th century and is still today known as the most popular.

Names: There is no other name the Labrador Retriever is known by. However, sometimes the name is shortened to be simply Labrador or even shorter, Lab.

Groups: The Labrador Retriever formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1917 and assigned to the Sporting Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Labrador Retriever can be between 21.5 to 24.5 inches in height and can weigh 55 to 80 lb. This breed has a medium sized body that is athletic and strong. The coat of this dog is straight, short, and thick feeling rough to the touch. The undercoat is soft and resistant to the weather which helps protect against elements like colder temperatures, water and such. The Labrador Retriever can come in three primary colors which are black, yellow and a chocolate brown. It may have a small white spot on its chest as well as having tan markings on its body.

Care: This is a very social and active breed that needs to be given attention daily. Exercise is needed on a daily basis with its best interest being in retrieving and swimming if possible. As this breed enjoys swimming it is recommended that the owner fences the dog away from any pools unless the owner doesn't mind sharing the pool with the dog. Getting the dog wet shouldn't cause an issue as it dries out quickly. It is recommended that the dog live with indoor and outdoor access so that it can be near its owner and still have room to run and play. The Labrador Retriever should be brushed once a week to remove any loose hair.
