Overview: The Kuvasz is a very active and high energy dog. It is not an overtly affectionate breed and doesn't like the company of other dogs, but it does do well around other animals. Though it resists training, it can become an amazing watchdog and an effective protection canine. The Kuvasz needs a lot of grooming because of its profuse coat which it is very resistant to the cold.

Temperament: Regardless of how cute and friendly this breed may look it is a very tough and fearless protector. It is gentle around children but it could be a little too much around younger children. It is reserved around people it doesn't know and can be assertive toward other dog breeds, but it does get along well with other animals.

History: The Kuvasz is considered to be of Hungarian origin regardless of the fact that it is known to have come from large dogs in Tibet that had been brought to Hungary through Turkey. The name is said to be a corrupted version of the Turkish word Kawasz meaning armed guards of the nobility. At one point in time only nobles were permitted to have this dog. During the late 15th century the Kuvasz was held in very high esteem and the breeding was very meticulously planned and recorded. It was used both as a hunting dog and a guarding dog for the nobles as it was skilled in bringing down animals like wolves and even bears. One particular owner of the Kuvasz was King Matthias I who kept a large kennel and is credted with significantly improving the breed quality through selective breeding. Over the years commoners had gained the ability to have this breed for their own who found that they made very good livestock dogs. During the time that this dog was being used by the commoners the spelling of the breed was changed into what it is known as today which ironically enough means mongrel. The breed population declined after two world wars but Germans continued to breed them. The Kuvasz was brought to the United States around the beginning of the 20th century.

Names: The Kuvasz is also known by the appellations Hungarian Kuvasz and Kuvaszok.

Groups: The Kuvasz was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1931 and assigned to the Working Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average Kuvasz can be between 26 and 30 inches in height and can weigh 70 to 115 lb. This canine is considered to be a very sturdy and well balanced dog. This breed has a double coat, the outer protecting the very soft undercoat. The outer coat is slightly rough and can either be wavy or straight. The color of the coat is solid white while the actual skin is between gray to black in color.

Care: This dog requires daily exercise like a long walk or a good amount of running. It is comfortable living in colder climates and can live outdoors if necessary. It does best when it has equal access to both the indoors and the outdoors. The Kuvasz needs to be brushed about twice a week and more often during times of shedding.
