Komondor Information

Overview: The Komondor is a playful and high energy breed that loves its master. It doesn't get along well with other dog breeds but it does like the company of other animals. It makes an excellent watchdog and protection dog as it doesn't like strangers and is easy to train. The Komondor does need a lot of grooming because of the amount of hair it has, and resists cold well because of it.

Temperament: The Komondor was bred to be a guardian of livestock and to think independently. It can be dominating so it is best if the one owning it doesn't let it have its way. This dog is reserved towards people it doesn't know and can be dominating, even dangerous around other dogs. It is happiest when it has someone or something to care for and protect. The Komondor is often good around children but it may become too rough for small children to handle and they may get overwhelmed by the dog.

History: The Komondor originated in Hungary when the Huns brought the Russian Owtcharka and bred them with other dogs native to that country. Used to guard sheep because of its resemblance to the animal, it could hide inside the flock and surprise any potential dangerous predators. The earliest record of the breed was in the middle of the 16th century although it is commonly agreed that the breed dates to far earlier times than that. It is said that this breed is purely responsible for making the wolves in Hungary extinct. The Komondor was still used primarily for herding until the 20th century. The first of this breed was brought to the United States in early 20th century and was accepted into the AKC only four years after it arrived. The breed was almost killed off in Europe after World War II, but through the efforts of dedicated breeders this canine made a comeback. Because of the amount of care that this breed’s hair requires it is still an uncommon breed, save in its country of origin. There have been recent attempts to use the Komondor for guarding flocks in the Western United States and as it stands it is looking promising.

Names: The Komondor is known also by a similar name, Komondorok.

Groups: The Komondor was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1937 and assigned to the Working Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average Komondor can be between 25.5 to 27.5 inches in height and can weigh between 70 and 80 lb. This breed has a large and muscular body covered with an unusual coat of white corded hair. It is normally recognized via its rather dense and defensive coat that looks like white cords. The coat can be white or cream in color.

Care: The Komondor needs to be walked for a long time daily to keep up its exercise. It is not recommended to let it swim as its coat takes a long time to dry. This breed doesn't like warm weather but it can easily resist the cold. The cords of hair must be separated often to release any dirt that has gotten inside. The Komondor could take up to two years before the hair starts to form cords.
