Overview: A very playful breed, the Japanese Chin is a very happy and affectionate dog. This canine is friendly with other dogs and pets as well as strangers. It is easy to train and has great watchdog potential. However it doesn't have very good protection abilities. There is a bit of grooming that the Japanese Chin requires. Because of it coat, it is fairly resistant both cold and the heat.

Temperament: A trustworthy and loyal companion, the Japanese Chin also loves to cuddle with its owner. This breed likes to play with all manner of creatures including strangers, other dogs and other animals. This dog is a calm and gentle animal that will be good around children. The Japanese Chin has been considered as cat-like; even being able to climb.

History: Regardless of the name, the Japanese Chin originated in China many centuries ago. Its actual year of breeding is unknown. As this dog was usually used as gifts for nobility it is thought that in the 6th century this dog was gifted to Korea by Zen teaching Buddhists. A Korean prince may have then brought it to Japan in the 8th century. Or it could be that a Chinese emperor brought it to a Japanese emperor as a gift more than a thousand years ago. Regardless of how it arrived in Japan it became very popular with the emperors there and was kept as a companion. The Portuguese were, perhaps, the people responsible for this dog reaching Europe as they had trade routes set up with the Japanese. The first Japanese Chin to be recorded in Europe however is when Commodore Perry brought a pair of this breed from his trip to Japan and presented them to Queen Victoria in the mid 19th century. The Japanese Chin was brought into the United States in the late 19th century and was accepted into the AKC a few years later as the Japanese Spaniel.

Names: The Japanese Chin is also known as the Japanese Spaniel.

Groups: The AKC formally recognized the Japanese Chin in the year 1888 placing it in the Toy Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average height of the Japanese Chin can be between 8 to 11 inches with a weight of 4 to 7 lb. The coat has a lot of hair that is smooth and soft to the touch. The colors of the coat can be either black and white, black and white with tan spots, or red and white.

Care: All that is really needed for the Japanese Chin's exercise is just a walk or just playing with it. This breed must live inside to stay comfortable but should have access to the outdoors once in a while. It doesn't like hot and humid weather. It is quite common among the breed to exhibit wheezing when breathing. The coat needs to be combed about twice a week.
