Irish Terrier Information

Overview: The Irish Terrier is a playful dog that has a lot of energy and needs to use that energy daily to keep itself happy. This breed doesn't like other dogs or pets very much and is standoffish with strangers. The Irish Terrier is not an easy dog to train but when it has been it will be worth it as this canine can be very good at watching and protecting against threats. It does need a bit of grooming once in a while and it is resistant to both heat and cold.

Temperament: This dog is often proud, energetic, playful, curious, stubborn, and adventurous. The Irish Terrier is often aggressive towards other pets and breeds and shies away from strangers. It needs to have exercise in a safe place daily. If given enough exercise it is obedient and well-mannered.

History: It is believed that the Irish Terrier was bred with the Black and Tan Terrier and the larger Wheaten-Colored Terrier which were both found to be in Ireland and used to hunt animals. This breed did come in several different color combinations until late in the 19th century when red became the dominant color. The first Irish Terrier was presented at shows in the late 19th century and not long after that it became the fourth most popular breed in England. Only a few years went by before the Terrier Club of England banned all ear cropping of Terriers. When the Irish Terrier reached the United States in the early 20th century it became the thirteenth most popular dog. The Irish Terrier was used during World War I as a messenger and sentinel dog.

Names: The Irish Terrier is also known as the Irish Red Terrier.

Groups: The AKC formally recognized the Irish Terrier in the year 1885 placing it in the Terrier Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average height of the Irish Terrier is about 18 inches with a weight of 25 to 27 lb.
The coat of this dog is dense and wiry with the hair growing close together. The hair is not long and isn't soft. The coat comes in shades of red with a small patch of white on the chest. On a puppy the hair may be black but that should disappear before it is fully grown.

Care: Daily exercise and activities are a must for this breed. Going for a long walk, a hike, or even just spending a couple hours playing with it should be enough for the Irish Terrier. The coat needs to be brushed about two times a week and occasional trimming two to four times a year.
