Overview: The Wire Fox Terrier is a very playful and affectionate dog that loves to spend time with its master. It doesn't get along well with other dog breeds and pets, however it seems to like strangers. It is relatively easy to train as it responds well to learning. The Wire Fox Terrier can make an excellent watchdog, but has poor guard dog potential. Grooming takes a dedicated owner as it needs to be combed three times a week with occasional shaping. This dog is fairly resistant to both cold and warm climates. Temperament: A very adventurous breed, the Wire Fox Terrier likes to explore and learn. It enjoys running around and chasing things. This dog is often reserved around strangers until it gets to know them a bit. It may act independent and tends to dig and bark. History: The ancestors of the Wire Fox Terrier were hunters used to catch and perhaps kill game that had hidden underground. It is believed by some that the Smooth Fox Terrier and the Wire Fox Terrier are from different backgrounds, the Wire Fox Terrier coming from the rough-coated black and tan Terrier of Wales. About two decades after the Smooth Fox Terrier had entered the show ring, this breed made its first showing. These two breeds were bred together quite often to increase the wire variety by making the dog smaller and increasing the white on the coat. After World War II, the Wire Fox Terrier's popularity rose tremendously. A century after the American Fox Terrier Club had been created the AKC separated the Fox Terrier breed into two breeds; the Smooth Fox Terrier and the Wire Fox Terrier. Names: There is no other name the Wire Fox Terrier is known by. Groups: The Wire Fox Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885 and assigned to the Terrier Group. Physical Characteristics: The average adult Wire Fox Terrier is about 15.5 inches in height and can weigh between 15 and 19 lb. The body of this breed is built to be fast and strong, short-backed yet covering a lot of ground. The coat is closely knit together that the skin cannot be seen even if parted with the hands. Care: Daily exercise is needed for this dog so it can stay both happy and in good physical shape. It is best if it lives indoors with access to a yard, however it can live outdoors during mild weather. The coat needs to be brushed about three times a week with shaping every three months. |
