| Overview: The English Springer Spaniel is a high energy gundog that loves to play, is very affectionate and friendly toward other dogs, pets and strangers. It is a strong dog breed and very agile with great stamina. In addition to hunting skills, it makes a good watchdog though it isn't necessarily considered good for protection. The English Springer Spaniel makes an excellent family pet. |
| Temperament: Recognized as a cheerful and affectionate canine, the English Springer Spaniel loves and is loyal to its family. It commonly exhibits an eager to please personality along with being receptive to training. When provided adequate daily exercise, the breed can make a good house pet. |
| History: The ancestors of this breed, from about the 16th Century, are considered earlier, larger spaniels used for hunting, specifically flushing or springing game. Around the beginning of the 19th Century, through breeding practices of owners, specific breed lines began to appear. The Duke of Norfolk developed a popular breed which took on the name Norfolk Spaniel. As the breeding became more refined, there were both larger and smaller strains, the smaller being known as the Cocker Spaniel and the larger named the English Springer Spaniel. Today, the Springer continues as one of the favored hunting dogs in the field. |
| Names: The English Springer Spaniel is not recognized by any other formal name. Sometimes, though, one might refer to it as simply Springer. |
| Groups: The English Springer Spaniel was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1910 and assigned to the Sporting Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: This excellent gundog is a tireless hunter, even under extreme conditions. It is a medium size dog standing from 18 to 21 inches and weigh from 40 to 50 lb. The double coat consists of a soft and dense undercoat with a flat or wavy, medium length outer coat. This provides the dog excellent protection from weather and field work brush and thorns. The legs, ears and chest have some feathering. Most common colors are black or liver with white markings, or the reverse being mostly white with black or liver markings; blue or liver roan; and finally, tricolor. The English Springer Spaniel has a kind and trusting facial appearance in addition to an alert look. Most often the tail is docked. |
| Care: Provided it receives enough daily physical and mental exercise, the English Springer Spaniel can make an excellent house pet. A long walk on a leash, obedience training and field work can achieve this. The coat requires brushing once or twice weekly and periodic trimming. It is best to let the dog live with the family inside and allow it ample outside time in a fenced yard.. |
