| Overview: The English Setter is among the most popular and elegant sporting dogs. An energetic gundog that excels in the hunting skills of bird setting pointing and retrieving, this breed is known for its friendliness toward other pets and strangers along with other dogs. It is affectionate toward its family members and loves to play, especially with children. The English Setter is the oldest of the setter family with some experts believing it dates back to the 14th Century. |
| Temperament: The English Setter has hunting and running in its heart. It requires significant daily physical exertion in order to feel its best and to avoid boredom. Provided it is given sufficient exercise, this field lines of this breed can make a calm inside pet. The conformation line can be found to be gentle and laid-back and make excellent companions for both children and adults of limited activity. |
| History: It is believed that the English Setter breed is the result of cross breeding of the Spanish Pointer, Large Water Spaniel and Springer Spaniel breeds dating back at least four hundred years, possible longer. The result was a highly talented and effective dog that could be used for discovering and pointing birds. Over centuries, the breed became more refined. In 1825, Edward Laverack started developing a strain that eventually produced the immediate ancestors of today's beautiful breed. The year 1859 saw the first show for English Setters, after which the popularity of the breed in England grew rapidly. This canine was introduced into the United States as English settlers sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to make their new home. Today, this breed continues in popularity. |

| Groups: The AKC formally recognized the English Setter in the year 1884 placing it in the Sporting Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: Symmetrical, strength, stamina and stylish, the English Setter has an elegant appearance. Its flat coat lightly feathers on its abdomen, chest, ears, legs and tail. The long and muscular neck is lean and ads a touch of grace to its lines. The coat is largely white with flecks of color intermingled which is known as belton markings. The English Springer Spaniel stands from 24 to 25 inches tall and weighs in the range of 50 to 65 lb. |
| Care: Though it enjoys playing outside, the English Setter lives best as an inside dog during nighttime hours. At least an hour of challenging exercise such as running and vigorous playing is demanded for this canine. Its coat requires frequent brushing and monthly trimming is recommended. |
