It can make a great watchdog that will be around its master as much as possible, aiming to please and protect. This breed is generally receptive to and does well with training.

Temperament: The Coton de Tulear is a very gentle, affectionate breed that will be alert to its surroundings, but is still friendly to people. It is a very social breed that gets along well with people, other dogs, and pets. Children shouldn't have a problem when around this dog as it is careful and shouldn't harm them. It likes to learn new tricks and to show off often. However it may become stubborn if its master isn't acting with leadership qualities.

History: The Coton de Tulear is a breed related to the French Bichon, the Italian Bolognese, and perhaps even some other native breeds had been mixed in as well. It is believed to have arrived in Madagascar with French Troops or perhaps with those that followed. This breed was practically unheard of until around 30 years ago when it was introduced to both Europe and the United States. This breed was popular among those that lived in Tulear, Madagascar and had promoted its breeding. There was a breed that had resembled those of Tulear on the French Island of Reunion, however it had become extinct. It is speculated that this Bichon type had been pupular in Tulear for nearly a thousand years or more. While still rare even in its place of origin, the Coton de Tulear is popular among those of higher class in Madagascar and is gaining popularity in the United States.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Coton de Tulear can be 10 to 12 inches in height, and can weigh between 12 and 15 lb. As Coton is the French word for Cotton, it is describing this dog having a cotton-like appearance. The coat is soft and fluffy. Some may have yellow tint markings on the ears.

Care: The Coton de Tulear likes to play around and even swim. Open spaces are a good environment for it to be in so it can run and get exercise. It can walk or hike for miles without stopping and doesn't have an issue traveling for long periods of times. This breed should be taken out for long walks on a daily basis to keep in shape and to be happy. This canine can live without a yard, but it will be very active while indoors. The coat should be brushed often to remove any dead hairs that could get tangled. A bath once or twice a year is adequate enough to keep this dog clean.
