Clumber Spaniel Information
Overview: The Clumber Spaniel has a unique build for this group of dogs in that it is long and low and stocky. It is not known for speed but has great stamina so that it can work all day. This is a breed that enjoys playing , is friendly with other pets, other dogs and strangers. Its coat helps provide tolerance to cold weather but makes it less effecting in heat. Though not particularly energetic, it is an enthusiastic hunter.
Temperament: Very much a laid-back personality, the Clumber Spaniel is not interested in strenuous exercise but does enjoy leashed walks, hikes and especially hunting. This canine is a rather quiet breed at home which can be either in the city or country and is gentle, affectionate and loyal with a desire to please.
History: Records of the Clumber Spaniel date back to England and France in the 18th Century, but it's actual ancestry is not certain. It is speculated that it may have Basset Hound and Alpine Spaniel as its main progenitors. The noble classes tended to keep control over ownership of this spaniel, so the common folk were not privileged to own and benefit from its hunting talents. By the middle 19th Century, the Clumber Spaniel was introduced into Canada by British Soldiers and later brought to the United States. Though not commonly known as a family pet, it is well appreciated by hunters and has received high honors in the show ring.
Names: The Clumber Spaniel is known exclusively by that name.
Groups: The Clumber Spaniel was among the earliest recognized breeds by the AKC having been entered into the Sporting Group in the year 1884.
Physical Characteristics: With its keen sense of smell, the Clumber Spaniel makes a good gun dog, especially as a retriever. Normally the coat is white, but it may have markings of lemon or orange on the ears and face. Sometimes there may be freckling on the legs. Straight, dense and flat on the body, the hair is feathered on the legs and tail. Its head is large with a heavy brow, broad muzzle, and large, square nose, with dark amber eyes. This breed is known to drool and sometimes snore.
Care: The coat of the Clumber Spaniel should be brushed two to three times each week. In dirtier environments it may be necessary to bathe the canine in order to keep the white coat shine so characteristic of the breed. A long daily leashed walk is appropriate to keep this dog happy.
