Chow Chow Information
Overview: The Chow Chow is a muscular, medium size, sturdy dog breed of the spitz family. Its origin is from Northern China and appears to extend back to the Han Dynasty, about 200 B.C. It's lion-like appearance can make it a bit frightening, but can be a devoted pet. The low energy yet endowed with strong stamina, the Chow Chow can function well with tasks related to hunting, herding, cart pulling, watchdog and protection.
Temperament: This dignified breed behaves in a reserved manner. It is not particularly affectionate or playful, even with its family, and is generally suspicious of strangers. The Chow Chow can be friendly toward other family pets, except for other dogs with which it can be aggressive. Serious yet stubborn, independent and hard to train, it nevertheless can be a loyal family dog, especially to one member of the family.
History: History: The actual history of this breed is not clearly known but it appears to date back many hundred if not a couple of thousand years. It is believed that the Chow Chow was originally used as a royal hunting dog by sniffing out and bird pointing. It appears that the fur of the long-coated variety was used as clothing in colder climates and the meat was eaten. The name Chow Chow is believed derived from pidgin-English. This was a general term used to describe miscellaneous items in a ship's cargo such as knick-knacks and curios. Rather than the ship's master enumerating every object in the hold of the ship, many items on board, including the dogs, were lumped into this category. Serious importation of the breed to England started in the late 19th Century when Queen Victoria expressed interest in it. The Chow Chow was featured in the London Zoo under the name Wild Dog of China. Today, this breed is best known as a companion dog.
Names: The Chow Chow is known exclusively by that name.
Groups: The American Kennel Club recognized the Chow Chow in 1903 placing it in the Non-Sporting Group.
Physical Characteristics: This is a powerful, heavy-boned breed with a short snout, tail that curls over its back and comes in either of two coat lengths. The long-coated variety had hair that is straight and off-standing from the body. The smooth-coated variety is hard and smooth. The undercoat is very effective at insulating from cold, but is a draw-back in hot weather. The Chow Chow has a black tongue, similar to the Chinese Shar-Pei.
Care: Though it can live outside in cool to moderate weather, it should be kept indoors during hot weather. The long-coated variety needs brushing frequently, at least three times a week, while the short coated variety can be brushed once per week. The Chow Chow should have daily, no-strenuous exercise such as a morning or evening walk or simply playing with it periodically during the day.
