| Overview: The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a talented gun dog with extraordinarily strong swimming ability. Its webbed feet help it manage difficult swimming conditions such as tidal currents and rough water. They exhibit a fair amount of energy, are trainable, affectionate and are tolerant of cold and do well with moderate heat. The Chessie, as some refer to the breed, is affectionate and generally friendly toward other dogs and family pets.. |
| Temperament: Strong-willed, courageous and protective, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is active outdoors but is calm when indoors. Intelligent and happy, this breed loves to spend time with its family and does well as a pet with families that lead an active lifestyle, especially families that hunt water fowl. . |
| History: Uniquely American, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever was the result of breeding two shipwrecked and rescued Newfoundland in 1807. These dogs were cross bred to local retrievers such as the Curly-Coated and Flat-Coat varieties, the Irish Water Spaniel along with the English Otter Hound. The result was a hardy breed that had tremendous stamina and could retrieve downed fowl in both icy and the rough water. It has an uncanny ability to mark, remember and retriever fallen birds. Though considered a superior gun dog, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever has remained limited in popularity. |
| Names: The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is named for the geographical area where it was developed and is known formally only by that name. Sometimes it is nicknamed Chessie. |
| Groups: AKC recognized the Chesapeake Bay Retriever in 1878 assigning it to the Sporting Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: This breed exhibits amazing stamina enabling it to retrieve over 100 birds in a day, even while swimming in rough waters. It measures from 21 to 26 inches in height with a weight range of 55 to 80 lb. The eyes are distinctive in that their color is yellowish or amber and wide-set on the head. Its ears are small, hanging loosely from the top of the head. The coat of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is short, thick and oily so that it repels water and can quickly dry after swimming. It appears in various shades of brown, deadgrass or sedge, allowing it to blend with its surroundings. As mentioned above, the toes are webbed. |
| Care: Daily exercise, especially swimming is important for the over-all well-being of the Chessie. It can live outdoors in temperate climates but prefers living indoors to be close to family. The coat should be brushed on a weekly basis. Bathing the dog should be avoided as soaps can ruin the important oils in the coat that keep it resistant to water. |
