| Overview: The Cane Corso is a large boned, very muscular mastiff type canine native to Italy. Affectionate toward its owner and family, easily trained and noble in appearance, this breed should start obedience training as a young puppy as it tends to be strong willed and will attempt to dominate others. Owners and family members must act confident and exert control over this breed or it will run things according to the law of the pack. |
| Temperament: Highly intelligent and perceptive, the Cane Corso learns what to do by being exposed to many situations, people, sounds and sights. Using that as a reference base, the dog can determine what is normal and abnormal and act accordingly. This breed enjoys playing with children. The Cane Corso wants to please its family and respond well to rewards. |
| History: The early ancestor of the Cane Corso is believed to the war dog of legend, the Roman canis Pugnaces. Not only was this breed used in battle but also as watch dogs, hunters and in the entertainment ring as fighters. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the roll of farm dog was added to its talents. It was even used in helping herd wild cattle to the slaughter house. As centuries passed the Cane Corso fell out of favor and usefulness. By the mid 20th Century, it had become almost extinct. In the 1970s, a few people recognized the potential of the breed and became enthusiastic about increasing its popularity. Within about twenty years, the International Cane Corso Federation was established as the breed gained a foothold in the world of recognized breeds. |
| Names: The name Cane Corso may be derived from the Latin words: Cane meaning dog and Cohors meaning guardian or protector. It is also known as the Italian Mastiff, Sicilian Bulldog, Sicilian Mastiff, Sicilian Molosso. |
| Groups: The American Kennel Club gave full recognition to the Cane Corso in the year 2010 entering it into the Working Dog Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: Rectangular in proportion, large, very strong and a majestic appearance help define this breed. It stands from 23.5 to 27 inches in height and weighs from 88 to 100 lb. The head is large with powerful jaws. Its short, thick coat can range from black to shades of gray, shades of fawn, red and various types of brindle. |
| Care: This is a breed that thrives on love but requires plenty of socialization and training. It does best when given a lot of owner attention and exercise. The Cane Corso sheds very little. |
