| Overview: The Bull Terrier is often described as a clown dog or a small child in a canine suit. This breed truly loves to play, is mischievous, affectionate, filled with energy and friendly toward strangers and other pets. However, it is not generally friendly toward other dogs and other smaller animals. The Bull Terrier can live in a variety of climates as it is tolerant to mild cold and heat. It can make an ideal companion dog and is effective as a watchdog and has some protection abilities. |
| Temperament: This breed is a family lover and needs to be with humans much of the time. Obedience training may be required as it quite stubborn. On the positive side, the Bull Terrier is very sweet natured and loyal to its family. Vigorous playtime each day that exercised both the body and mind helps keep this canine happy and occupied. |
| History: During the 19th Century, there were many attempts to breed the ultimate fighting dog as this sport was a popular form of entertainment. In 1860, one such breed, the Bull and Terrier, was chosen by a man named James Hinks for a breeding experiment. He crossed-bred that breed with the Dalmatian and White English Terrier. The result was an all white dog with strong jaws and excellent defensive attitude earning it the nickname "white cavalier'. Further breeding experiments resulted in a more streamlined appearance. The Bull Terrier became a much sought after companion dog. In the 20th Century the Bull Terrier has become a favorite in movies and advertising. |

| Groups: The American Kennel Club recognized the Bull Terrier in the year 1885 classifying it in the Terrier Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: Very muscular, taller than it is long, but with a low center of gravity are some of the physical attributes of the Bull Terrier. One of its most recognizable features is its unique head shape which is long and deep with straight up ears sitting on top if its head. The coat is short and flat over its tight skin. Although white was the original and is today the most common color, it can be found in a variety other colors due to the introduction of brindle Staffordshire Terriers into the breed early in the 20th Century. |
| Care: The Bull Terrier’s short coat is very low maintenance as it may need brushing infrequently. A strong daily dose of exercise is an absolute must. A run on a leash or unleashed in an enclosed area is one way of meeting this need. Mental stimulation, which is also very important, can be met through playing games. Owners of Bull Terriers need to be serious about spending ample time with this breed. |
