| Overview: The Bullmastiff is a very large breed, low on energy but high on watchdog and protection dog abilities. Moderately affectionate and friendly toward other family pets, this breed is not particularly friendly toward strangers. Originally bred to be an estate guardian, it is fearless, confident and quite intelligent. The Bullmastiff exhibits talent in several arenas such as conformation, obedience, tracking, even working as a therapy dog. |
| Temperament: Gentle and affectionate with its family, the Bullmastiff can be an excellent, protective family pet. This breed does not bark much. Though known to be an independent thinker and resistant to traditional training methods, the Bullmastiff is a devoted companion dog with a willingness to please. |
| History: The Mastiff is one of the main ancestors of the Bullmastiff as is the Bulldog. In England, during the late 19th Century, large estate owners had a need to protect their livestock and game from poachers. As poachers became more aggressive, the gamekeepers feared for their lives. A dog that would intimidate, catch and pin down the poachers without harming them became highly desirable. This need was met with the crossing of the two breeds mentioned above. The year 1924 saw the English Kennel Club giving pure breed recognition to the Bullmastiff, followed in 1933 with the American Kennel Club's recognition. |
| Names: The Bullmastiff is not known by any other name. |
| Groups: The American Kennel Club recognized the Bullmastiff in 1934 placing it in the Working Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: This is a large dog, massive and muscular, one of what many call giant breeds. It stands 24" to 27" tall with a weight range of 100 to 130 lb. Authorities claim the breed to be 60 percent Mastiff and 40 percent English Bulldog in appearance. The weather resistant coat is short and dense with colors of red, brindle or fawn. It has an alert look about it, dark eyes with V-shaped ears of medium size that lay down next to the cheeks. The muzzle is dark with large, black nostrils. |
| Care: Moderate daily exercise, such as a leashed walk, helps keep the Bullmastiff in good condition. However, the owner should avoid exposing this breed to hot and humid weather. This breed lives comfortably as an inside dog with soft bedding and plenty of room. The coat requires little care. |
