| Overview: The Black and Tan Coonhound has been used by hunters in the United States since the 18th Century. This is not a high energy breed, but they are considered excellent scent hounds, watchdogs and even receive high marks as protection dogs. Their powerful ability to follow scents qualifies them to trail any mammal; they are especially good at this at night. |
| Temperament: The Black and Tan Coonhound can be an excellent pet. It is laid back, friendly, not easily riled up and gentle indoors. Its powerful hunting instincts make it very difficult to dissuade it from following a trail outdoors causing it to be somewhat stubborn and independent. They are moderately affectionate, friendly toward other dogs and people and playful. They are not easily trainable. This breed is known to bay and howl. |
| History: During the 18th Century, in the United States, this breed was developed by cross breeding the Bloodhound with Black and Tan Virginia Fox Hound. In the eastern and southeastern mountainous regions of the U.S., the Black and Tan Coonhound became recognized as an excellent hunter of raccoon, bear and opossum, especially in the nighttime hours. They follow the trail, tree or corner their quarry and bay until the hunters arrive who can then dispatch the animal. Though recognized by breed clubs such as the AKC and CKC/USA, they are not generally found in the show ring or simply as family pets. Rather, they continue to be used for their original purpose, hunting dogs. |

| Groups: AKC recognized the Black and Tan Coonhound in 1945 placing it in the Hound Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: The height of this breed ranges from 23" to 27" and weighs from 55 to 75 lb. As one might expect the coat color is black and tan. The coat is short, laying close to the body and providing good protection from weather. As it trails a scent, it keeps its head low with its long ears often dragging on the ground, possibly stirring up scent. Its baying sound is deep and loud enabling its owners to locate it on hunts. |
| Care: The short coat of the Black and Tan Coonhound may need infrequent brushing. It can live well outside in temperate zones. Regular wiping of the dog’s face may be needed as most coonhounds tend to drool. For exercise, a daily leashed walk will do, or a large fenced area for playing. Because of its drive to follow scents, this breed should not be allowed to roam free. |
