| Overview: The Brittany is known as a hunting, show and companion dog. Known to have a great deal of energy and need for daily exercise, the Brittany loves to play, is highly affectionate and all around friendly with strangers, other pets and dogs. They are easily trained and can serve well as watchdogs but are not generally useful as protection canines. The Brittany is not a high maintenance breed. |
| Temperament: As a pointer breed, the Brittany is somewhat independent minded. It has a need for an abundant amount of strenuous exercise every day, at least an hour. If not so exercised it may vent its boredom or frustration through destructive behavior. |
| History: In France, about the middle of the 19th Century, sportsmen wished to develop a dog breed with particular hunting skills. Crossing English Setters with more diminutive land spaniels, they obtained a stub-tailed dog with strong scent abilities and superior woodcock hunting skills. The French aristocracy took a liking to the breed because of their excellent pointing and retrieving abilities. Those same skills were attractive to nefarious individuals who were involved in poaching activities. By 1925, the breed was introduced to Mexico. Though not well received by hunters in America at first, as it was eventually embraced as the Brittany was shown to be an excellent dog in the field. Eventually the breed became one of the most popular of all gun dogs. |
| Names: The Brittany is also known by the name Epagneul Breton. Prior to 1982 it was known as Brittany Spaniel, but the latter word has since been dropped because it is more retriever-like than spaniel in its hunting behavior. |
| Groups: AKC recognized the Brittany in 1934 entering into the Sporting Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: Standing from 17.5" to 20.5" in height and weighing 30 to 40 lb., the Brittany has the longest legs of those in the sporting group. Light boned, medium sized, heavy eyebrows and medium coat are additional identifiers of this breed. They may be born tailless or have it docked at about four inches. The Brittany has the ability to run long distances and is very athletic. |
| Care: Other than daily serious exercise as mentioned above, the main upkeep need is a good coat brushing every three to four days. Though it can live outside in moderate climates, it is a social dog and thrives better with daily human contact. Inside living is good, also, but only if there is adequate fenced yard area for outside play. |
