| Overview: The Borzoi breed has a unique appearance with its long, narrow head. As a sight hound, meaning it hunts by sight rather than scent, it is a powerful, fast and elegant looking canine that was bred to hunt wild animals including wolves, fox and hare. They are a moderately energetic and affectionate dog and get along fairly well with other dogs but not so with other pets. They can be trained and have good resistance to cold weather. |
| Temperament: Living with its family, the Borzoi is well-mannered. Independent, it will chase most any animal that moves outside. Somewhat shy with strangers, it is not generally good as a watchdog. It is sensitive natured, graceful and enjoys playing. However, it may not show enough interest in playing to be an adequate companion for children. |
| History: References to the Borzoi can be found as far back as the 16th Century. The Russian aristocracy was known to breed it for several hundred years. They would use the dogs for hunting dangerous wild animals. Often the packs of dogs would exceed 100 in number. In the 19th Century, there existed seven subgroups of the Borzoi. Much of the Borzoi population was killed at the time of the Russian Revolution. However, a fair number of the breed had been given as gifts to foreign dignitaries and royalty, mostly the type known as Perchino , from the kennel of Grand Duke Nicolai Nicolayevitch. Today, the Borzoi is recognized more as a glamor dog in the show ring and lure coursing than as a hunter. |
| Names: The Borzoi is also known as the Russian Wolfhound. |
| Groups: The American Kennel Club ( AKC ) recognized the Borzoi in 1891 placing it in the Hound Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: The Borzoi is a large breed of canine measuring at least 26" for females and 28" for males with weights ranging from 60 to 105 lb. It has a long silky coat of any color or combination of colors. It can be wavy or straight but around the neck it should be thick and curly. The narrow and long head is barely domed with strong neck and powerful jaws. Its small ears lay close to the head unless the dog is at attention at which time the ears are erect. |
| Care: The energy and temperament of the Borzoi demands daily exertion. Coat care consists of brushing every other day. They do best living indoors but can be outside dogs in moderate climates with shelter and bedding. |
