Border Terrier Information
Overview: The Border Terrier is quite possibly the oldest of terriers hailing from Britain and dating back to the 18th Century. Medium in size, it was used as a ratter and fox hunter. They make good watchdogs, are fairly playful, energetic, affectionate and moderately friendly both to other dogs and strangers. They live best in moderate climates. This terrier does very well in Earthdog trials as well as those of Obedience and Agility.
Temperament: Friendly and easily controlled, the Border Terrier responds well to bidding but is somewhat independent minded so it may wander off to appease its curiosity and hunting instincts. This breed is known to dig out of yards to escape confinement and some can be barkers. They can make fine family pets as they do well with children and other pets except for rodents which they will tend to pursue.
History: The Border Terrier derives its name from the border area of Scotland and England, similar to the Border Collie. However, the function of this terrier is totally different from the collie. The Border Terrier was used to chase vermin such a foxes and other pets farmers found undesirable. By the late 19th Century, this breed was involved in Border Hunts alongside the foxhounds. Possibly related to the Dandy Dinmont Terrier, the actual ancestry of this breed is unknown. Eventually recognized by breed clubs, it hasn’t achieved notoriety in the show ring but continues in its role with hunters and as a good family pet.
Names: Although once known by several names, one which was the Coquetdale Terrier, this breed is now known only as the Border Terrier.
Groups: The American Kennel Club recognized the Border Terrier breed in 1930 and classified it with the Terrier Group.
Physical Characteristics: One of the physical manifestations of the Border Terrier is its "otter" head. It is of medium bone standing from 10" to 11" in height and weighing about 11.5 to 15.5 lb. Its narrow body enables it to follow its quarry into otherwise tight passages. This canine’s long legs contribute to its ability to keep up with horses during hunts giving it speed, endurance and agility. Covering the thick and loose fitting hide, the coat consists of a dense but short undercoat with a wiry and straight outer coat.
Care: Though not highly energetic, daily exercise such as a brisk walk on a leash or vigorous play is warranted. Though it can live as an outdoor dog in moderate temperatures, it enjoys time inside with its family, too. Coat care consists of weekly brushing and stripping several times each year.
