| Overview: The Border Collie is the top tier of sheep herding dogs. Highly intelligent, imminently trainable, friendly, affectionate and playful all describe this otherwise "workaholic" canine breed. It can make an excellent watchdog and can serve as a protection dog. Most importantly, it needs daily work, especially herding duties. Breeding emphasis has been on intimidation skills while herding rather than physical standards. This breed excels in obedience trials. |
| Temperament: Daily vigorous exercise and work tasks are of paramount importance for the Border Collie. Otherwise, it may become bored and resort to destructive behavior. Dependable and loyal, smart and agile, the breed can be an excellent working family dog. However, it tends to herd small children, so it is better owned by families with older children. Very focused, it often stares to intimidate the object of its work. |
| History: After hundreds of years of selective breeding, in the late 19th Century the Border Collie was established. Called by this name because of its proximity to the borders of England and Scotland, it became known and loved by sheep herders because of its abilities to gather sheep, control them using what is termed "giving eye", and using stalking like movements. Queen Victoria saw this breed in action and became an avid fan. When the Border Collie arrived in the United States, sheep herders were instantly won over by this talented breed. |
| Names: Though it was sometimes referred to as the Scotch Sheep Dog in its early years, it is now known only as Border Collie. |
| Groups: The AKC recognized the Border Collie in 1995 placing them in the Herding Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: There exist two varieties of coats with this breed, smooth or rough. The smooth coated variety a is short coat while the rough coat is medium to long. The coat can be in a wide variety of colors. Standing from 18" to 23" tall and weighing from 30 to 45 lb., The Border terrier is agile, quick to turn and stop, strong boned, graceful and exhibits stamina to match its boundless energy. |
| Care: Border Collies should not be kept indoors all the time. Rather they need daily physical challenges that will keep them occupied. This goes far beyond a walk on a leash. They need lots of outside exercise, preferably herding. Their coat should be combed or brushed twice weekly. Though they can live outdoors in temperate climates, they do well in the home with their family some of the time. |
