Bloodhound Information
Overview: The Bloodhound is among the oldest and most popular scent hounds. Whereas most scent hounds are used for trailing and even treeing quarry, the Bloodhound is especially effective for its tireless trailing of humans. Though a very friendly breed, it can be shy and sensitive. This breed can also be excellent as a watchdog but because of its affectionate nature, the Bloodhound is not used for protection purposes.
Temperament: Good with children, but not particularly playful, the Bloodhound is trustworthy and quite active (not at all lazy as commonly depicted in movies and cartoons). Stubborn and independent, it is not receptive to most types of training. However, it scores high marks in quickly learning trailing skills.
History: Some believe the Bloodhound was first brought to Europe before the time of the Crusades, probably from Constantinople. From the earliest times, the bloodline was kept pure with strict breeding practices of the noble classes resulting in the name "blooded hound", eventually shortened to Bloodhound. Arriving in the United States in the 19th Century, this breed came to dominate the trailing of lost persons and escaping criminals. Once the person has been found by the dog, it will not harm him or her. That is when those in charge take control. So, the Bloodhound is not an attack dog. Very focused on trailing as a job, this breed is not generally kept as a pet.
Names: The Bloodhound is also known by the names St. Hubert hound and Chien St. Hubert.
Groups: The American Kennel Club recognized the Bloodhound in the year 1885 entering it into the Hound Group.
Physical Characteristics: The Bloodhound is a large and powerful canine measuring between 23" and 27" in height and weighing from 80 to 100 lb. It is not particularly fast, but has amazing endurance. Long ears, long tail and loose skin causing deep wrinkles or folds around its head and neck are characteristic of the breed. The short and very dense coat can be in variety of colors including black and tan, liver and tan, and red. At times lighter or badger-colored hair, and sometimes flecked with white will be present in the darker colored coats. Bloodhounds tend to drool a lot.
Care: Daily cleaning of the skin folds and wrinkles along with the ears is essential. Daily vigorous exercise in a safe area is important. As with other scent hounds, they will follow where their noses take them if not kept indoors or in a fenced yard. The short coat rarely needs more than a periodic brushing. They can live outside in moderate temperatures with shelter and comfortable bedding.
