| Black Russian Terrier Information |
| Overview: The Black Russian Terrier is a recently developed breed dating back on post World War II times. Developed in Russia to help with military tasks, it is recognized as both an excellent watchdog and protection dog. Though very wary of strangers, a well-bred and socialized dog does show affection to its family and is friendly to other dogs and pets. This breed is trainable and has an excellent memory along with high intelligence. |
| Temperament: Courage and confidence, along with a calm disposition describe this breed. They can be gentle enjoy playing with children and living inside with their family. But, they are bred to be protectors, so they can be serious defenders of family members. If they don’t want to do something, their stubbornness will show as they tend to be independent thinkers. |
| History: After World War II, the Russians found a need for a reliable guard dog to work with the military. As there were no such dog breeds native to that country, several breeds were imported and cross breeding experiments conducted. It is said that a Giant Schnauzer, Roy, was used as a sire with females from various breeds including Rottweiler, Airedale Terrier and Moscow Water Dog crosses. The result has become known as the Black Russian Terrier. In fact, the search for an excellent military dog was met with this breed. Among the tasks called for are transporting supplies, searching for the wounded, mine and explosive detection. This dog can work in very difficult weather conditions and in rough terrain. |
| Names: The Black Russian Terrier is known by a variety of names which include Chornyi, Terrier Noir Russem, Schwarzer Russicher Terrier, Tchiorny Terrier, Mustaterrieri. |
| Groups: The American Kennel Club recognized the Black Russian Terrier as a member of the Working Group of dogs in 2004. |
| Physical Characteristics: Courageous, very strong, tall and imposing in appearance, the Black Russian Terrier is, in fact, black. Its outer coat is straight, thick and coarse while its undercoat is soft. It is large boned and well muscled. The animal’s height is from 26" to 30" with a weight range of 80 to 145 lb. They are not prone to barking unless provoked in some manner. |
| Care: Though a low shedding breed, the Black Russian Terrier’s coat should be combed weekly and trimmed several times a year. Their intelligence and physical needs require daily exercise and human contact. They benefit tremendously from both agility and obedience training. |
