Overview: The Black Mouth Cur is a strong and friendly dog. It will be protective of its master and family, also its territory. It may not trust strangers and will stay by its master’s side when in public. It will usually get along fine with other dogs, however it shouldn't be around small animals as it likes to hunt and chase. It is accepting of training and likes to learn new things. Over all it can be considered a great companion and addition to any family if trained properly. It is a hunter at heart and proficient at chasing down and killing small to medium sized animals.

Temperament: The Black Mouth Cur is a very bright and social breed that needs a lot of attention from its master before it can really start to be trained. This dog is considered to be so loyal that it would even die for its master. If raised around children from an early age it has great potential be an excellent family dog. At some time in its life it may become laid back. It may be territorial as it was first bred to be a guard dog for families. While the Black Mouth Cur is great around other dogs when off its property, it will chase those same dogs off if discovered in its territory.

History: There are several different histories dependent on location of origin. The different types are; the Ladner Yellow Black Mouth Cur from Mississippi, the Red Black Mouth Cur from Alabama, Weatherford's Ben Black Mouth Cur from Texas, and the Florida Black Mouth Cur from Florida. The first of this dog to get registered was the Ladner Yellow Black Mouth Cur in April of 1964 to the National Kennel Club. Mr L.H. Ladner had a very detailed description of the breeding which aided in its acceptance by the NKC. The breed was used for chasing prey into trees, hunting animals, and even for search and rescue missions. The Red Alabama Black Mouth Cur was a little different as it was used to hunt and protect, as well as gathering livestock when it was time for slaughtering. There were several Breeders attempting to retain and improve the Red Black Mouth Cur throughout the years and after some time the United Kennel Club recognized that breed. The Weatherford's Ben Black Mouth Cur was used for herding cattle, and the Florida Black Mouth Cur as well. However,this dog was also featured in some paintings making its origins well documented. The Black Mouth Cur is now located around the America's including the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Haiti, and even such other nations as Russia, India and part of Europe.

Names: The Black Mouth Cur has several different names each leading to a different section of the breed. It is also known as the Yellow Black Mouth Cur, American Black Mouth Cur, Red Black Mouth Cur, Ladner Black Mouth Cur, Ladner Yellow Black Mouth Cur, Southern Heritage Kennel-Registered Yellow Black Mouth Cur.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Black Mouth Cur is around 16 to 25 inches in height and can weigh between 45 to 95 lb. The coat is different dependent on its place of origin, some thicker, some lighter, but both can occur in the same litter. The muzzle is very strong and, as the name tells, black in color.

Care: The Black Mouth Cur should have access to a large yard so it can run and play as many of this breed come from hunting heritages. A large amount of exercise is recommended for this breed with long walks and long playing sessions. As this breed is also very intelligent it needs to have both physical and mental exercise to be completely happy. If this dog doesn't get enough exercise on a daily basis it can misbehave. Occasional combing would be good to remove any dead hairs.
