Belgian Malinois Information

Overview:  The Belgian Malinois dog breed belongs to a group of native Belgian sheep-herding dogs referred to as "chiens de berger Belge". This breed differs from the others as it hailed from the Malines region and has a shorter coat than the others. As with many shepherd breeds, this one has a great deal of energy requiring a good amount of daily exercise. Though not an affectionate dog breed, it is easily trained, make excellent watchdogs and protection dogs, and are low maintenance.
Temperament:  The Belgian Malinois is intensely attentive to the tasks at hand. Its alertness, intelligence and serious manner contribute to its work in several fields. This breed is aloof with strangers and quite protective of its family and home. It is not friendly toward other dogs and family pets and should not be kept with such. Its need for considerable daily exercise is paramount to its level of happiness.
History:  For many years, shepherd dogs in the country of Belgium were recognized as talented herders and guard dogs. Emphasis on breeding was for working ability, not form or beauty. In the late 1890s, a specialist was called in to help define specific breeds within the overall group. He was able to determine four distinct varieties. The most popular of them was the Malinois. Its popularity in the United States rose during the first half of the 20th Century, but then declined. However, in recent years, its demand as a police dog dramatically increased, even rocketing past the German Shepherd for this type of work. Additionally, it serves well in the roles of security, contraband detection, herding trials and assistance.
Names:  The Belgian Malinois is also known by a shortened version of its name, Malinois, or its generic group name, Chien de Berger Belge.
Groups:   In 1959, the American Kennel Club recognized the Belgian Malinois and classified it in the Herding Group.
Physical Characteristics:  The Belgian Malinois stands between 22" and 26" high with a weight range of 60 to 65 lbs. Sturdy, powerful, and square proportioned along with elegant carriage describe this breed. Its dense undercoat is covered by a relatively short, hard and straight outer coat that is easy to care for.
Care:  The Malinois has boundless energy requiring vigorous daily exercise. This goes beyond a leashed walk, but can be met with a prolonged active play session. Of course, herding is the ideal way to meet this need. It can live as an outside dog in temperate to cool weather. Weekly coat brushing is helpful; more often during times of shedding.
