| Basset Hound Information |
| Overview: The Basset Hound is a breed of "lows and longs" – low to the ground, low in energy, low maintenance, long ears, long body, long tail. This breed is a scent hound that was used in trailing prey at a slower pace so that commoners could follow it on foot. They enjoy playing with children, make good companion dogs and watchdogs. They have a distinctive loud bay. |
| Temperament: Among the most calm and laid back of breeds, the Basset Hound is content laying around for hours. It is good-natured and is compatible with other animals. When tracking, their determination may keep them on the trail until it becomes lost. They may be a challenge to train but are not totally resistant to it. Generally, they are friendly with family members, strangers and other household pets. |
| History: Originating in France, this breed is one of the few surviving short and slow scent hounds that was commonly used in hunting badgers as far back as the 16th Century. The word basset is from the French word bas which designates something as being a dwarf or low to the ground. The aristocracy had access to faster and larger hunting hounds which they could follow on horses. The common people needed a slower hunting dog after which they could run. Eventually, the Basset Hound made it to the England and United States in the late 19th Century. By the mid 20th Century, the breed made a name for itself in advertising, television and movies due to its droll looking face. |

| Groups: The American Kennel Club recognized the Basset Hound as a member of the Hound Group in 1885. |
| Physical Characteristics: The Basset Hound is a heavy boned breed, has a heavy and long mid-section, short legs and large muzzle. Its coat is thick and lays close to its body. The face is somewhat wrinkled and they ears are famously long, sometimes dragging on the ground, possibly to stir up scent. |
| Care: The low energy of the Basset Hound breed doesn’t mean it shouldn’t have exercise. A walk on a leash or yard play is always enjoyed by this dog. Little coat grooming is required, but facial wrinkles should be checked and cleaned regularly. Though it may enjoy being outdoors, the Basset Hound does best as an inside dog. |
