Basenji Information

Overview:  The Basenji comes from the area of the Congo in Africa. Almost unique to this breed is its lack of barking. This breed is known to be fastidious, avoids getting wet (don't expect to swim or take walks in the rain with Basenjis), is affectionate, loves to play and has a good deal of energy. They are independent thinkers and generally do not respond well when called. You can expect good companionship from the Basenji, but they are not receptive to training.
Temperament:  Basenjis are very family friendly dogs that love to run, chase and play. If socialized early with other dogs, they can get along well with them. Their mannerisms are considered cat-like by many as they exhibit curiosity, aloofness, clean themselves and avoid water. Some are known to climb fences or dig under them. They tend to run when in the open, so leashes are necessary when out of the house or other confined area.
History:  Basenjis are believed to have close ancestors dating back to the time of Egyptian pharoahs. In modern times, they were discovered being used by Pygmy hunters in the African Congo. Often they would be used as pack hunters in order to steer their prey into the hunters' nets. Some British explorers brought this breed to England in the early 20th Century, but the dogs didn't survive their new environment. Eventually, the Basenji was brought to the United States where it was accepted and thrived.
Names:  The Basenji is often referred to as the "barkless dog", but its other names are Congo Dog or Congo Terrier, notwithstanding the fact that it is actually a hound.
Groups:  A member of the AKC Hound Group, the Basenji was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1944.
Physical Characteristics:  Though barkless, the Basenji does use its howl, or yodel as some people call it, especially when lonely. The dams generally have only one heat cycle per year. Standing about 16" to 17" in height and weighing approximately 22 to 24 lb., its short coat comes in a variety of colors including red and white, black and white, tri-colored or brindle. Its long-legged profile contributes to its agility and speed. A furrowed forehead, lack of doggy odor and curled tail are also characteristics of this breed.
Care:  Basenjis need daily exercise to avoid boredom and expend their energy. A long walk on a leash, vigorous game or a run in an enclosed area are ways to meet this need. Brushing is helpful, but not particularly necessary as their short coat has few demands. They clean themselves, so bathing is rarely necessary. A warm climate is best if they are to live outdoors, but they can live indoors as well.
